not quite. an "undetermined malicious party" compromised them and injected malware into the version that people were downloading from their site. it was only one or two versions of CCleaner that were malicious, they didn't get bought by a "malware company". If you've got the most recent CCleaner, you're fine.

Malwarebytes and Windows Defender will get the job done most of the time. Insert cheeky comment here about switching to Linux if you care about security.

Yeah but the way it works is that nothing is trustworthy after one mistake. No forgiveness. Never.

Same shit happened with Linux Mint even though it's fine now.

I mean you can go about it that way if you want, but I assume that you don't keep your money in any bank either because I can guarantee something has gone wrong in every bank somewhere along the line

It was a one-off release that they caught and fixed.

I also don't trust them but current versions of the software are clean.

sarcasm doesn't work when you're just stating the actual views of way too many people, it means I genuinely can't tell

I use Avast Antivirus. It's decent in itself, and it's also compatible with pretty much every video game.

Note to gamers: Don't download McAfee. It's made a few of my games not run before.

Ah. I thought the "No forgiveness. Never." being somewhat over-the-top sounding woulda done it.

I think a company being attacked is less concerning than their response to it happening. If they drag their feet and avoid saying something, especially waiting until someone catches the problem, that'd ruin my trust of them very quickly. If they quickly say something and fix it, that would preserve a lot more of my trust. These companies are being assaulted constantly.

Nothing. Don't fucking delete temp files outside of the programs that made them and don't even try to "clean your registry"

99% of your temp files can be cleaned by going to your browser and saying "delete temp files"

Not trying to be a dick here, but it really does come down to common sense for 99.999% of the time.

What you have is more than enough, but MB is annoying now.

Well yes and no.

If a determined attacker is spcifically targeting you, you're pretty much screwed. Plus the amount that a modern Operating System does to protect you is pretty subststial. Then there's plenty of techniques like spoofing and whatnot that can catch you even if you're generally pretty good at identifying phishing or malicious links. And of course you can do nothing to make sure the services you put your info into are secure.

exactly. I work as an analyst in a SOC for a big MSSP, so I see every part of the spectrum, from small state-wide banks who have got no idea what they're doing to multi-national corporations with China already knee-deep in them, but want immediate notification if anyone's got an Ask Jeeves toolbar on their browser.

while most of them listen to what i say (because they hire us for the expertise), some of the views I hear just boggle the mind
