I swear I must have missed this, when Umbrella was working with the Ashford family, was the original founder trying to pass off the entire company to the Ashford family or was Umbrella just trying to expend it's company, but why the Ashford family?

Yeah, the original founders were James Marcus, Ozwell Spencer, and Edward Ashford. Edward's son, Alexander, studied genetics rather than virology, so he wasn't really skilled in expanding the capabilities of the Progenitor virus. This meant Ashford's research laboratory made zero progress while Marcus' and Spencer's made several breakthroughs.

Alexander was able to clone his ancestor Veronica which led to the birth of Alfred and Alexia. Alexia was a child prodigy and made enough progress with the virus to create T-Veronica, but she "disappeared" for decades. Alfred knew fuck-all about viruses, so he was given command of Rockfort Island and the Ashford family lost influence in Umbrella over the years.

True and then Alexia found a way to bring back that progress and she tried to over take everything in her own direction but she ended up dying because her father actually made a way to destroy the veronica virus with the linear launcher.
