In November, the county proposed one solution: jailing the offenders again by taking away their right to go to a homeless shelter instead of facing an "illegal camping" charge if caught outside. An amended version of the ordinance passed in January despite protests from the ACLU. Things have now come to a head. Despite the fact that homeless shelters will not accept the offenders, the county at the end of April ordered the camp's residents to clear out by May 10 or face jail time.

Rather than finding a new place to shuffle the offenders around once more, the ACLU and other groups instead want a judge to file an injunction barring the offenders' evictions and to rule that the current residency rules constitute "cruel and unusual punishment" and are, therefore, unconstitutional. Since the housing ban lasts for life, many of these people are elderly, infirm, or incapacitated, Valerie Jonas, a lawyer working with the ACLU of Florida, said in yesterday's release. If the hundreds of individuals are banished to the border of the Everglades, they will be forced to live out their lives on the literal margins of society without any cover from the elements. The county created this problem by restricting areas in which our clients can and cannot live, and the county can solve this problem now by repealing the residency restriction.

The ACLU is terrible. They tried to prevent the city of Honolulu from removing the property of the homeless who violated city sidewalk ordinances (which came about to target the homeless who clutter the sidewalk with their trash).

Glad they got bitched slapped, now the city is gaining power from the state to allow HPD to enforce the parks and sidewalk ordinances.

This is what makes America so great we don't believe in rehabilitation. You commit a crime we throw you in prison for a few years then when you get out we punish you for life. So hopefully you have no other option but to commit more crimes and end up back in jail. This is what I love about private prisons they are literally pushing for actual justice by lobbying to implement more laws to jail people for. As far as I am concerned the more people in jail the more safer I am. So I say raid this homeless camp and lock them all up it is what they deserve and why I love America.
