1957, the second Eurovision ever. The first one was in Luganoo, Switzerland, and this one's held in Frankurt am Main, Germany. Some of the basics of today make their first this year around, such as one entry per country and fully disclosed points. This year has only ten participants, but show more diversity than the first year.

Without further ado, here are my brief opinions on the songs. I'll use the current-day score system of 1-8 and 10 and 12, but also a separate 1-5 rating, since a winner's trophy doesn't mean the song's good. It only means it's the best of the bunch. Moreover, the song's historical result is enclosed in brackets.
Now with song links, because I wasn't able to condense this list to a single message anyhow!

Bob Martin Wohin, kleines Pony?
[Austria]

This fairly jolly big band/jazz piece is hard to take seriously (and not in a "hahaha, this is funny" way) due to Bob's oafish baritone.

Patricia Bredin All
[United Kingdom]

I'm sure one could wisecrack about UK's "tradition" of sending in bad songs started here. In honesty, though, this is not awful. Patricia demonstrates her great voice, but the song's brevity is its undoing, ending right as the expectation is of the opposite.

Nunzio Gallo Corde della mia chitarra
[Italy]

A guitar-driven piece with melodramatic singing and an overlong intro. It's okay, I guess.

Danile Dupr Amours mortes (tant de peine)
[Luxembourg]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0nMxZ8L1cI" data-time="

At first, I wasn't welcoming of Danile's low and undulating voice, but when it wasn't clashing with the song's softness, my doubts were put to rest. I wouldn't call this a particularly remarkable entry, but it's decent nevertheless.

[8th/10]
Bobbejaan Schoepen Straatdeuntje
[Belgium]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mu8ueVHTb9k" data-time="

Although not a song I care that much for, an 8th place finish is rather harsh. Curiously though, I feel Straatdeuntje sufers of the opposite of Austria's entry by being a bit flat when it should be cheerful, especially when Bobbejaan delivers his trallalalas.

Lys Assia L'enfant que j'tais
[Switzerland]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16ltDhw2lxs" data-time="

Gentle, smooth, relaxing. That's the words I'd use to describe this one. Should be a winner, right? Well, no. What this song fails to do is to remain in my memory for more than thirty minutes. So, yes, it's a wonderful but very forgettable listen.

Paule Desjardins La belle amour
[France]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2-XDnBHEbc" data-time="

This is much like L'enfant que j'tais , except a smidgen more energetic, and should I say, not as unmemorable. I still wouldn't be sure I'd remember La belle amour at the day's end.

Corry Brokken Net als toen
[Netherlands]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWUOHzMjTZw" data-time="

The powerful intro fanfare, Corry's stern and powerful voice, and her phlegmy Dutch makes the first 15 seconds hard to bear, and portends an abrasive song. Fortunately, this concern is unfounded, as the remaining 3 minutes are thankfully pleasant. I especially enjoy the brief violin interlude.

Margot Hielscher Telefon, Telefon
[Germany]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoDpE2LtoZA" data-time="

A tiny bit gimmicky with the greetings in different languages, but its justified and acceptable when the subject of the song is international calls. Was the telephone still regarded as a technological marvel in the late 1950s? In any event, I like the song's amicable but uplifting serenity, and its melody is quite catchy.

Birthe Wilke & Gustav Winckler Skibet skal sejle i nat
[Denmark]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vX3WRMF5TuY" data-time="

The orchestration is minimal and sufficiently subtle to grant Birthe and Gustav the center stage, and they deliver a nuanced and warm duett sung with commendable finesse in Danish. Danish is like the drunk version of Swedish, so any song that doesn't draw my lips to an amused smirk is an achievement in itself.

Most of the songs in this topic are more pleasant than the majority of the ones I've heard in the 2018 contest topics tbh

Also it's funny to me that people other than BL now connect me to Eurovision, even though it's literally just one song from this year's contest that I like. Granted, I never shut up about it. But still.

Perhaps that is due to resources being skewed for the presentation (music video, costumes, stage props etc.) at the expense of the song's quality?

Partially that.

Partially because I find the style of musical style most of the newer entries are doing to be boring. I like "Dance You off" because it's particularly funky/house-y in contrast.
