schedule an interview, but you can never get ahold of them again? This has happened to me like at least a half a dozen times. I don't get it, like am I doing something wrong? I'll usually leave a voicemail by the second attempt, and then give it maybe one or two more tries at most, but they never answer or call me back.

I'm in the job market right now and I've actually never had that happen, are you calling the right number back?

Actually I had it happen once but I waited a week before returning the call because I thought it was a scam company.

Yes, I'm definitely calling back the right number. This is stuff I purposefully applied to, to be clear. Sometimes I get calls from unknown, scammy-sounding companies, but I don't bother with those.

I had a rude response prepared because I misread this at first as you asking why I don't email them. But yeah, this is my thought exactly. If they have such a hard time answering the phone, they could just use my email which they have. I can't even email them instead since I don't have their email.

that wouldn't work for me, I never check my email hardly and I get so much spam if i'm a day late checking it, it will be buried. especially considering i've gotten a call back from a place I applied to a whole fucking year after I applied lol. fortunately I was in need of a new job again by that point.

I don't know what kind of spam you get, but you can just unsub all that, if you're talking about official marketing email-type spam. If that's not what you're talking about, shouldn't it be getting filtered anyway and not an issue for your inbox? But there's no reason why you should be getting so much spam, regardless.

Plus you can make a new email for applying to jobs, it's not hard to make email addresses. I'd recommend Gmail, at least over stuff like AOL and Yahoo... those seem to get way more spam than Gmail inboxes, in my experience.

I did make a email just for business purposes. I think right now it has like 50k email in the inbox. the problem is unless I am expecting an important email, I don't check it.

well as said its also lack of checking, so it builds up since I don't go in often enough and clean it out. I had one email that had nearly a million unchecked emails. but I easily went over a year without checking that one and when I did I said fuck taking the time of manually deleting all that. (can't remember if there was a select all feature or if I even bothered looking to be honest.)

You seem to be missing the point here... who is emailing you? This shouldn't be a problem unless you give out your email really indiscriminately and/or have an extremely poor spam filter. I don't understand how that inbox could get to 50k emails, checking often or not. That's like 140 a day if you let it go for a year.

idk probably from using my email to sign up for several other services. some places sell info like that, and other times i've not paid attention and unclicked the boxes about getting emails on offers or newsletters.

edit: spam was kind of a generic term I was using for "email I have no interest in"

yeah well to each their own, I prefer an old fashioned phone call. its just better all the way around for me, like if i'm not available when they want me to come in its easier to negotiate a better time for me.

I don't think I've gone through a single online app where you can leave off your email, and you rarely have a say in how they'll choose to contact you. It's pretty silly to take yourself out of a potentially great opportunity because you're too lazy to take care of your email/"prefer a phone call".

i'll give a employer my email if they ask for it, but i'll tell them its easier to call me. but if they insist on doing it by email i'll just ask when to expect it by and keep a eye on my email until then. and its not that i'm too lazy to check my email its just I seldom have any real reason to, so why bother.

and to be honest going a little off topic here, but i'd hate to see the world make it so you MUST have access to the internet to get by. there have been times in my life that would have royally screwed me over. cause if I ain't got a lot of money to pay bills with internet is the first thing to go.

I can get email on my phone's data plan, and I'd need some kind of phone anyway if I wanted them to call me. So unless you only have a landline, which I'm not sure is even any cheaper, or you'll only pay for a $15 flip phone but not a $50 low-end smartphone, I don't really see how needing internet would be a problem here. Also there's a Starbucks or McDonald's with free wifi on like every other block.

cell phone will go before land line if money is a problem for me, and its not a price thing, land line phones are just more reliable so I consider having it a higher priority

edit: especially considering where I live I can't get reception inside my house, I have to take my cell phone outside if I want to make calls.

Cell phone reception can be pretty shitty, I'll give you that, but I feel like your priorities are completely backwards. Or at least the landline phone should be at the bottom... internet and cell phone, I could see cases for putting them 1-2 in either order.

as said land line is just more reliable. unless they've changed something I can even use a landline when the power is out as long as I have a corded phone which I do. internet is just not that important to me aside for a lot of places requiring it for applying to jobs now which I hate. some people just can't afford shit like that. i've been fortunate but i've known people that could literally only afford to pay the bills and put food in the fridge.

It's "reliable" in the limited space where you can actually use it, and strictly for making calls. I'd rather take a phone that's a little less reliable but that I can use in many more places and do several other useful things with. It can also be used when the power is out because it has batteries. I mean, there's a reason everybody has cell phones now and younger people are skipping the home phone. But whatever you say gramps

I agree with mooreandrew58 on this. When I got a landline, it actually made my cable bill cheaper somehow. Haha. And you can't charge a cell phone without power(unless you have one of those cool things. I can use it to jump my truck, but it also has outlets on it...

But I also don't check my email much because nothing important goes there. I do check it when I'm waiting for something specific, but I have also told companies to call if they can, as it's a better way to reach me. My email is always full of junk... I have to go through soon and delete stuff...

It might be the area. I think my grandma's phone still worked the last time she had a power outage...

Apparently, some people could get it to work is some areas. But other people said theirs was fine. Also, it can't be cordless, and it would have to be a wall phone jack instead of the phone jacks in the modem or whatever...

fortunately we have a very damn good power company here, never had the power be out much longer than a hour, and it really only goes out during a hurricane. and usually its not even close to a hour before it comes back on.

i've lived in a town before where the power would go out about once a month at least, (or at least it felt that often in hindsight) its how I knew about the corded phone thing.

Yes, but I would always eventually get ahold of them because I'm persistent as hell. I recall one perspective employer blowing off a phone interview where I might have tried calling them 20-30 times over the course of the month to get in touch with them. I didn't get the job anyway (which they claimed they were holding off filling), but it was more the principle of them failing to honor a commitment.

Of course, the worst douchebaggery I encountered was when I was first entering the professional job market (although technically I held white collar jobs while in college) where I ran into things like employers who would have you drive out an hour to meet with them when they had already settled on another and just wanted to look at other candidates as a backup. And, in general, you'll also always get employers who don't really know what they're looking for and will waste your time. (Or, even more annoyingly, employers who basically use your interview as a free consultation.)
