It can depend on the keyboard. Some are a lot louder than others. Desktop keyboards especially have a large loudness range.

I write very heavily, but I type gracefully. I think my writing is louder than my typing in most situations. If I have just one sheet of paper against a desktop, it's a damn construction site of writing noises.

i'm about the same but not so much on the noise level, i'll just break the tip off a pencil in a heartbeat.

I'd say it's mostly this. And even if you have a lighter keyboard, you might be more used to using more force to press the buttons.

Also, I'm sure a lot of people don't realize you don't need to bottom out the keys in order for it to activate. I can type quieter on my desktop keyboard that some people can type on their laptop keyboards simply because I don't bottom out my keys and I don't have Cherry Blues or anything noisy like that.
