1958 follows the same formula established as the year before, again featuring 10 participants; UK is absent, and Sweden debutes. The overall quality of the songs seem to be on a rise.

Without further ado, here are my brief opinions on the songs. I'll use the current-day score system of 1-8 and 10 and 12, but also a separate 1-5 rating, since a winner's trophy doesn't mean the song's good. It only means it's the best of the bunch. Moreover, the song's actual standing is enclosed with brackets.

Ow! Corry's voice frequently ascends to an amplitude and sharpness that pokes at my ear drums in a bad way. I would not give this a point, if I could.

I like the lively and joyful mood this strives for, but the, shall I say, galloping repetition of "polenta" and "risotto" irk me like stains of... brown on a white shirt.

Solange Berry Un grand amour

This feels so middle-of-the-line, I struggle to think of what to say about it. Mellow, but unremarkable, I suppose.

Liane Augustin Die ganze Welt braucht Liebe

A fairly decent and enjoyable smooth lounge jazz piece without any grandiose but potentially unnecessary and detracting bells and whistles to set it apart from the rest.

Raquel Rastenni Jeg rev et blad ud af min dagbog
[Denmark]

A warm 50's-like light tune with a touch of a waltz. Not a bad song, although the Danish language adds an element of unintentional hilarity, most notably by pronouncing "blad" as "blall."

It's not silly, it's not irritating, it's not melodramatic. All around, a pleasant song, though I can't think of anything particularly unique or outstanding about it either.

I'm sorry, but starting with four lallallas feels amateurish and lazy. Thankfully, this flaw doesn't return for the rest of this tender lullaby.

Features a quintessential fifties-style grand musical-esque vibe with prominent, almost bombastic brass and an instance or two of backing vocals. The simplicty and repetitiveness of the lyrics becomes apparent after a while, however.

Andr Claveau Dors, mon amour
[France]

A very well produced and orchestrated lullaby that, against my fears, never trips over itself to deliver dramatic but tawdry fanfares, and Andr is a very capable and talented singer who never starts belting. It's a near-perfect combination that almost puts it to the top.

Sigs are rather pointless, except if it's to showcase animation and images.

Domenico Modugno Nel blu dipinto di blu

This is the topper. The Grammy-winning, many times covered, worldwide hit by one of Italy's most remembered musicians. It might not be my most liked Eurovision song ever, or even in my top ten best 50's songs, as this music style's not my flair. Nonetheless, it's the most delightfully memorable song of this year's contest, and the best entry of the fifties Eurovisions (so far).

Kind of the same here, actually. I easily compare the songs of the contest to what was popular at the time, and feel a bit of a disconnect when my faves are blues, doo-wop, and rock and roll. The contest has ballads and crooners that probably appealed to middle-agers. Although, during the 60's well get to hear more than a few songs whose audience must've been toddlers...

Anyhow, if I have something in general to say about Dutch songs, it's that how it's sung can make or break it for me. I'm inklined to regretfully dismiss even the nicest of songs if the vocalist is phlegmy. That said, I do know a couple Dutch songs I actually like.
