1959 sees very few changes. 11 participants this time; Luxemburg takes a breather, but UK returns and Monaco debutes.

Without further ado, here are my brief opinions on the songs. I'll use the current-day score system of 1-8 and 10 and 12, but also a separate 1-5 rating, since a winner's trophy doesn't mean the song's good. It only means it's the best of the bunch. Moreover, the song's actual standing is enclosed with brackets.

Oh, Austria. It had a weak debut, then got better, and now it stumbles back with this...thing, where an incompetent Austrian Tiny Tim-wannabe lacking self-awareness sings a calypso-swing-yodeling mashup. Ugh.

Jacques has kind of a stuffy voice, like his nose is clogged. The song itself isn't groundbreaking, but certainly not bad. Alas, Monaco's average offering cannot compete against this year's lineup.

Vivacious, yet remains moderately sedate. I'd put this higher up on the list, but... I can't be the only one who thinks the "oui, oui, oui, oui" is obnoxious and detracts from the overall experience?

Dutch that's not phlegmy? Impressive. I must give it a thumbs up for that and the dulcet performance, even if the song is little more than an above-average late 1940's radio playlist filler.

Isn't this a first? A female duett. Does this genre count as youthful music? I figured teens in this era were either rocking to Jailhouse Rock or fawning over Ricky Nelson. In any event, I can only speak for myself, and while it's not quite my cup of tea, this swinging fifties tune is cool enough.

Smooth, warm, and pleasant. Might be good for reducing anxiety and stress, I wager.

Another Dutch song. Is it phlegmy? A little. But it's tolerable. With that out of the way, do I like the song? It's light and gleeful, but not too silly or childish, so... Yeah, it's nice.

Denmark's Een beetje, but with more of a skipping-happily-and-unconcerned feelingemphasized with a xylophone of all things.

Reminds me of 1950's Finnish tango, but without the melancholy.

The UK returns with a joyful tune that, to some, might be intolerably ridiculous and childish, especially the stage performance. But it's a really catchy song.

Sigs are rather pointless, except if it's to showcase animation and images.

I don't have a clear favorite for this year, but I had to think of what song I liked the most. To be honest, I consider Piove's attempt to tell a story with an emotive Domenico at the helm is admirable, but it feels... aurally flat when contrasted with the excellent record version. It's this rendition that coninced me to cast my 12 points for it over the other hopefuls.

Well, I saw a topic by BalanceLost, I think, about the recent Eurovision, and copied the tagged names from there. I really don't know how much they care about Eurovision in the first place, but if anyone wishes not to be tagged (or to be added), I will gladly comply.

That said, call these songs vacuous relics of the past or tragically forgotten gems, it's probably worth to give them a moment of exposure, even if it's quite marginal on a social board of a video game site. Most of the performers were contemporary celebrities in their respective countries, but have been dead for decades and may've become entirely unknown to a modern audiences. If their Eurovision song is any good, they might have more greatness in their repertory ready to be discovered and enjoyed. Musetto, by Domenico Modugno, for example.
