THANK YOU SENATE!

EDIT: Fixed the article and quote

http://thehill.com/policy/technology/387985-senate-votes-to-save-net-neutrality-rules?amp

The Senate on Wednesday voted to reinstate the FCC's net neutrality rules, passing a bill that has little chance of advancing in the House but offers net neutrality supporters and Democrats a political rallying point for the midterm elections.

Democrats were able to force Wednesday's vote using an obscure legislative tool known as the Congressional Review Act (CRA). CRA bills allow Congress, with a majority vote in each chamber and the president's signature, to overturn recent agency moves.

They argue that without the Federal Communications Commission's net neutrality regulations, which require internet service providers to treat all web traffic equally, companies such as Verizon and Comcast will be free to discriminate against certain content or boost their partner websites.

The bill, which passed the Senate 52-47, will have a much harder time in the House, where Democrats would need 25 Republicans to cross the aisle in order to bring it up for a vote.

Correction: the matter was brought to the Senate floor; voting hasn't yet been done on it
Democrats in the Senate could prevail in a vote as they have at least 50 votes with all of their party on board, plus Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine. (Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., is undergoing cancer treatment in Arizona and is not in Washington, D.C., to vote.)

However, the measure is unlikely to pass in the U.S. House and even if it were would have to be approved by President Trump.

Still, Democrats hope a public vote might increase the pre-midterm election pressure on some lawmakers to reconsider their support on an issue that's popular with voters. Passage in the Senate would send a clear message to American families that we support them, not the special interest agenda of President Trump and his broadband baron allies," said Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., who sponsored the CRA resolution.

Nothing. People who think their cute little petitions and posts on Facebook are delusional. The government will never allow NN to remain. All we can do is watch and hope.

Incidentally, this is like the only case where "thoughts and prayers" actually is the only viable solution.

It's frankly not an issue on many voters' minds right now. Most people don't understand it, and they're not going to care about something they don't understand.

It goes to vote tomorrow in the House (assuming Paul Ryan even lets it). Best you can do is contact your House rep between now and then.

It probably won't pass regardless, but it's worth a try.

NN has been policy for as long as the Internet has been a thing. you constantly spout the "it's Obama policy" lie.

NN does not give any sort of power to the government. it keeps the power with the users, and not the providers.

fastlanes are established by slowing down unwelcome packets, not by making anything faster.

You literally can't slow down the packets enough to be slower than the DNS server, though. That's the bottleneck, and ISP's have NOTHING to do with it.

no, those are the lies...

the lack of NN would give all ISPs the ability to do things they cannot right now. things that will make them money at the cost of the consumer. whether they will or not is the only question. Comcast and Verizon have been lobbying for this for 15 years (funny, why would they do that if NN is only a few years old?), so they obviously have plans. Google has publicly said they're in favor of NN, so they might not. at least, not right away. but once they see the dollar signs...

In this situation? More than the ISPs. The government tried other ways to enforce net neutrality but the ISPs challenged those things and ended up forcing them to use FCC Title II after it was shown they really couldn't be trusted. Then one of them got one one of their people in charge of the FCC to undo it. Plus anything the government would be able to do with their net neutrality rules that would actually effect us would still be doable whenever net neutrality does get ended.
