For the Laurel page.

So it says Laurel, and anyone who says it doesn't is wrong.

It's literally trolling.

Why are people even making a big deal out of it? It says laurel, everybody hears it say laurel, and a bunch of trolls claim they're hearing yanny because they think it's funny. That's all there is to it.

It depends on what frequency you hear.

It was on a talk show last night. I hear "yanny" when it's played normally, but when they changed the frequency, I heard Laurel.

Wait, do you really say "ideal" for "idea?" Unless that's a typo.

Not poking fun. I just had a close friend in high school who said ideal for idea; my girlfriend at the time had a friend who said it as well. Oddly enough, her friend and my friend ended up together and have a kid.

That's the way I've always said it.

Ok and the dress was obviously one of the color combos but people could see both because of the light in the picture and how the brain works.

Same with this. I hear yanny when I was unprompted and first heard the clip. I can't help it. I wanna hear. The device you listen to on it matters, as well as, apparently if your brain attends to the high or low frequencies.

Using the tool where you can hear both, I've been able to get myself to hear laurel in the default clip, as well as hearing both switching.

Using my phone's speaker, I can hear both with the original audio by focusing on which word I want to hear. On other devices, I have to change the pitch of the recording to be able to hear "Yanny." So it's really just a test of the quality of your speakers or headphones. Crappy speakers say "Yanny," mediocre ones say either depending on what you want to hear, and decent ones will only say "laurel."

The original audio on vocabulary.com says "laurel" clearly without the noise and spectrum losses that the viral audio has so it's impossible to hear "Yanny" from it.

Yeah that's true as well. People saying it's laurel are being obtuse, the sound was heavily tampered with. Seems like it's both.

The recording of the playback of the original audio over-emphasized higher frequencies and added noise (see spectrum below). Poor speakers overemphasize the higher frequencies again so people are hearing "Yanny" coming from them. Those that insist that they only hear "laurel" have speakers that either emphasize the lower frequencies or de-emphasize the higher frequencies with the end result of bringing the audio back into balance.

It obviously has both in the edit, and just laurel in the original. This isn't really a matter of perspective. Though likely a more discerning ear would be able to tell the difference more easily. Other than that though the audio was meant to trick people.

I listened to the vocabulary.com clip using two separate devices and three different output devices, and it's unambiguously "laurel." Considering the purpose of the site, it'd be extremely peculiar and, dare I say, misleading if it sounded like "yanny".

did you listen to the original and the twitter clip side by side? there's a clear difference in quality, which isn't really up for debate. the low quality/"doctored" one emphasizes the high frequency modulation which happens to sound like a different word. and from there different people discern different interpretations between the low and high
