I've heard a lot of people say over the years that he was just pretentious and fake deep with his lyrics but other people who consider him a lyrical genius.

there needs to be a middle option because that's where he falls. Love him as a performer but he wasn't the BEST lyricist...he also wasn't bad...

Not really. A couple songs are pretty catchy but I never really got into them.

Like it sucks but most of their best tracks were either bsides or covers

Idk. I kinda hate grunge cus it was too edgy. I like bands like black flag or pavement cus they're just goofy

My text in the OP was just me showing the extremes of both sides. It has nothing to do with the poll. I'm simply asking if he was a good lyricst or not like the question in the title and the poll says.
Can't really add a middle option to "is ____ good" what could I add? A maybe? It's a pretty straightforward yes or no question.

Saying yes doesn't mean he was the best, simply that he was a good lyricist.
Saying no doesn't mean he was the worst lyricist, simply that he wasn't a good one.

Well then in that case he was just good, and there's an option for that in the poll.

You do realize a song doesn't have to have a single one meaning that holds your hand do you know exactly what it's about right? You realize some things can be intentionally made to have multiple interpretations right?

That's like sitting down to watch 2001 and then being like "what the fuck, the ending didn't literally tell me exactly what it meant and left multiple possible interpretations, Kubrick is a terrible film maker!"

I'd argue that all of his songs have some meaning even if the lyrics themselves are random bullshit. For example, "I hate myself and wanna die" has random bullshit lyrics, but I think the song title tells us that the song did in fact, have a meaning that we all overlooked.

Milk It

I am my own parasite
I don't need a host to live
We feed off of each other
We can share our endorphns
Doll steak, test meat
I won my own pet virus
I get to pet and name her
Her milk is my shit
My shit is her milk
Doll steak, test meat
Look on the bright side is suicide
Lost eyesight I'm on your side
Angel left wing, right wing, broken wing
Lack of iron and/or sleeping
Protector of the kennel
Ecto-plasma
Ecto-Skeletal
Obituary birthday
Your scent is still here in my place of recovery

this is my favorite lyrical song.

To be fair about the interview, who knows how honest he's being because he'd lied about multiple things to make it sound like he wasn't even trying, or didn't care, when he clearly did.
I recall in an interview, this was well after they were famous btw, him saying something along the lines of he still doesn't know a single guitar chord or how to play guitar, that he just wings it in the studio and when he plays and does whatever he thinks sounds good.
Which I call total bullshit on that, watch him play shit live, was he a great guitarist? No, but he clearly had some idea of what he was doing, and was able to consistently play what he supposedly just pulled out of his ass without knowing what it was. Plus he was able to do covers of other songs yet supposedly he didn't know a single chord? Not even the basic fundamentals of the guitar? Yeah, I just don't buy it.

So with him, who the fuck knows how serious he's being when he says things like that because he tried so fucking hard to give off this illusion that he didn't care about anything, that he never tried, that he just did whatever. Trying to have this punk persona, yet he apparently cared a lot.

But tbf I personally do believe he was being completely honest about the lyrics, but I'm just mentioning that it's hard to know for sure because he's clearly lied about things like that before.

Lol if you think Cobain is worse than Vedder

Nirvana's most iconic song is literally about a deodorant, and the entire chorus is random shit.

Compare that to Jeremy, Alive or Black.

Cobain just got much more important after he died, like a lot of artists, including Tupac. Tupac couldn't even touch Rakim with a 10 foot pole, yet, he's being called the G.O.A.T by most people.
