First time for me going to a wedding that I had to travel for.

Already spent hundreds getting down here, is a gift still expected/necessary?

This. The general consensus is likely to be that you bring gifts to a wedding. If it's genuinely not feasible and these people are important to you, let them know in advance.

Yeah, the gift is supposed to cover the cost of your meal at the wedding (~$150).

That's why I've never gone to one.

I know covering the cost of your meal/drinks is standard. There's just no way I'm dishing out another $200 just for the gift. Maybe like $50 or so, but this is already costing me quite a bit.

I know 2 of the people I came down with, aren't getting them anything. That's what prompted this topic
