FPS is consistently popular and open world games are bigger than ever yet the only stable franchises are Fallout and Farcry. Homefront The Revolution came out a few years ago and Rage 2 is coming out soon and that's pretty much your lot. I've got a dozen ideas for games like this but no one seems to be making them. Is first person significantly harder to program compared to third person so that if a company wants to crap out a quick cash in open world game it's better to go third or what? This has been bothering me for a while.

FPS work best when you have a path and a mission. It's supposed to be high octane action. Hard to do that when you transverse wilderness for a while.

FPS isn't inherently any more high octane than TPS. Linear FPS games have a whole spectrum of pacing. First person is immersive and shooting is just fun. It works more than fine in an open world.

Probably because extending gameplay by creating infinite spawn camps you can repeatedly shoot at isn't really that fun nor a reason people want to play open world games. Open World games should allow the player the freedom to do whatever they want and FPS kind limit the player's available actions to things that allow them to shoot at the problem.

The vast majority of games are combat based. Again, there is nothing inherent to FPS that says it has to be just that any more than anything else. There's also plenty of ways to go about combat to keep it fresh and interesting.

Open World games generally give you different options for combat. FPS is kinda limited to guns.

Like a good example of a doing open world fps well would be Borderlands as they had 4 unique characters with their own playstyles and each character had 3 skill trees that could be invested into to allow them to pick a playstyle within the playstyle. Add randomized weapons that made it so every drop would always be different and allowed guns to have some very interesting effects with rng.

I'm not saying it's impossible to do one well, but it's much harder because you have you've restricted yourself to guns with an FPS. And even the borderlands had issues becoming too grindy when BL2 drastically nerfed the drop rate of rare weapons and BL2.5 not being different enough from BL2.

Nut there is nothing restrictive about guns. You have a whole spectrum of ranges that they can be used at, different firing rates. You can specialize in sniping or running in with a shotgun which play completely differently. If you're not going fully realistic you can also throw in a bunch of different ammo types, alternate firing, crossbows, long bows, various explosives. Compare that to The Witcher 3 which has fantastic combat using just a sword and a few magic spells. I don't know why you think shooters are so restricted. And that also has nothing to do with that fact that you can't walk ten feet without bumping into an open world TPS, so why are there not a similar number of FPS?

First person is just kinda a bad way to explore a world, and open-world games rely so heavily on exploration.

Well, that's just not true. Fallout and TES make their living on exploration. First person is even better for exploration because you can get your nose right into everything. They also tend to be more interactive rather than just picking up things that glow or have a button prompt on them.

Can't you switch between first person and third person in those games?

There's also Destiny.

I think it would be tough to make without being redundant. Far Cry, Borderlands and Destiny are all really popular. I'm not sure if Rage 2 will sell that well.

Oh yeah the new Metro game is going open world.

yeah, but first person is the default view (and you can't leave first person in Daggerfall and Arena)

I would definitely consider FO more RPG than FPS. Just like Metroid Prime is more FPA than FPS.

Open worlds are by default Adventure games of some kind (Action-adventure, Adventure RPG) or else they're poorly designed. So I guess the question is more asking why there aren't more Adventure FPS's, which is kind of an awkward combo tbh.
