Twitter account is a public forum and blocking people who reply to his tweets with differing opinions constitutes viewpoint discrimination, which violates the First Amendment.

Ha! Suck it, liberals! Trying to silence people just because they disagree with you... You failed! Sad!

He's not blocking their free speech. He's blocking them from leaving a comment under his tweet. That's definitely a stretch of the imagination, here.

This is like me complaining that I can't post on SBAllen's announcement board.

Hes blocking people from seeing them. Thats a no-no as a government official.

This is also a private site so free speech doesnt apply here.

I dislike Trump as much as almost anybody, but that's fucking stupid. Other people's free speech rights aren't infringed by being blocked on a private service and especially not the case when you can get around a block by creating a new account anyway.

that has nothing to do with the ruling. it's because Trump is using twitter as an official government communication platform since he is PotUS.

again, this is all explained in the article in the OP.

I wonder if Trump will actually listen to this ruling. Itd definitely be funny to watch an impeachment hearing over Trump blocking people on Twitter.

There'd be more merit than impeachment hearings over a president getting a blowjob.

This is such a joke!

Completely unconstitutional! Since when does the President have to give every random nut on the internet a platform for their voice?

it was because he blocked them, meaning they cannot read his tweets. and since his tweets are official government publications, they need to be accessible to everyone. this is all covered in the article, by the way.

I don't even have a Twitter account and have no issue reading anyone's Twitter account

If Twitter set up such as system, the court might agree with you. Twitter doesn't have such a system. You can block people from reading and/or replying to your posts, or you can mute people which prevents you from see their posts but let's them see yours.

I don't really recall how Twitter decides which posts non-user can read, but if you are directly linked to a tweet you can still read it. The president could potentially get around this ban, therefore by having a dedicated webpage to automatically link all of his tweet.

Hes using it in an official government capacity. Makes his use ATM non-private.

Itd be like if SBAllen was president and used his Announcement page for official statements. He cant just go ahead and block someone from seeing it.

I liked the other posters suggestion to allow(even though you said they don't do it) people to read but not post. Then he could say all he wants and not be trolled. Facebook allows it so it seems odd that Twitter doesn't. But I'm sure he will find a way around it perhaps with your suggestion. Might as well find a win-win-win for everyone

If social media is that imperative to free speech then social media companies should be held to the same standard that the first amendment is designed to protect.

You cant have this both ways and be consistent.

this is specifically because Trump is using the platform as official WH communication. nothing about this applies to regular old Twitter users.

Hes allowed to mute people so he cant see what they post, which doesnt matter anyway because hes under no obligation to read what other people post on Twitter.

Lol, oh. Then why did this even need a judge? Just mute the haters.

Of course the usual suspects dont know what theyre talking about.

Trump is using his personal account as a way to give out official government statements. Because of that, and only because of that, he cant just block people from seeing them. Once he no longer is using his personal account as a vessel for OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT STATEMENTS, this ruling will no longer affect him.

Not everyone's Twitter accounts are official government statements.

The first amendment is strictly about government blocking free speech. I'm not sure I get your point

So you understand why it applies to @potus but not @realDonaldTrump or do you not understand how it applies to either of them?

I get what you are saying but it's still ridiculous in practice. He certainly should be allowed to block people from his private account, don't you agree despite what the judge said?

You're missing the point where he doesn't have a "private account" while he's in office because it's a public medium and while president any statements he makes are official statements.

So if Trump comes out and says "my twitter account is no longer an official mouth-piece of the president of the US", then this gets reversed right?

He'd have to actually stop using his twitter account the way he's using it now. Them declaring it made it really easy to classify it that way, but even if the White House hadn't, 99% of what he tweets is related to his office, his politics, etc. so I don't think he would be able to avoid it.

i can't tell if you being intentionally obtuse here or not.

because he is making official government statements, his Tweets are considered public record and need to be accessible to everyone. what he whispers to people in private does not apply because it's not considered an "official government statement" like his tweets.
