Another year, more contestants: Yugoslavia, Spain, and Finland. Finland! Yay! Finland! The tradition of high expectations and crushing disappointment starts here!

Without further ado, here are my brief opinions on the songs. I'll use the current-day score system of 1-8 and 10 and 12, but also a separate 1-5 rating, since a winner's trophy doesn't mean the song's good. It only means it's the best of the bunch. Moreover, the song's actual standing is enclosed with brackets.

Greetje Kauffeld Wat een dag
[Netherlands]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBnIF9gQxkg" data-time="

A pleasant and promising start leads to a bouncy tune with some of the worst phlegm-Dutch I've heard. Wat een dag? More like wat een dahhrrh. Ech...

A harmless but bland and unremarkable entry. Next.

Lale Andersen Einmal sehen wir uns wieder
[Germany]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGAfCD0mzVc" data-time="

I'm baffled. Lale starts with a speech. Oh, that's the intro? Then I continue to be baffled, as this song feels so tardy and lethargic, that I question if it's accidentally being played at half of its intended tempo.

Lill-Babs April, April
[Sweden]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzldSvZG6cc" data-time="

It's supposed to be cute and cheerful, and I would assume that Lill-Babs isn't a barely qualified pretty face Sweden, but somehow, this feels like it's her first time singing it.

The Allisons Are You Sure?
[United Kingdom]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySufc64ssis" data-time="

I'm truly torn. On one hand, I want to like this uptempo and most contemporary and youthful ballad in the Eurovision thus far, but I wish the Allisons had performed with more courage. Now it feels like they're too timid to energize the song, rendering it relatively flat and hollow.

Betty Curtis Al di l
[Italy]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUt5XlrAAY4" data-time="

Starts out gentle enough, but periodically ascends to deliver the usual bellowing that I have come to anticipate from these songs. Betty has just the right stuff to make it work though, but even she can't mitigate the banality of those awful la la las.

Franca di Rienzo Nous aurons demain
[Switzerland]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03-NjbYQz14" data-time="

This has many good things: a mellow singer, a pleasing orchestra, and a cozy ambiance. Alas, they're the ingredients of a song so unexceptional that it's almost flavorless.

Colette Deral Allons, allons les enfants
[Monaco]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mg1ydx9FCyA" data-time="

This couldn't be more fitting for a children's movie. Even the name seems perfect for that. That said, I don't hate this entry, as it's cheery and sweet without being cloying and coddling.

Bob Benny September, gouden roos
[Belgium]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwEBgI8-KLs" data-time="

This somewhat standard crooner comes close to weaving itself into that ideal middle ground of starting softly with an ascent to powerful vocals along with a harmonious orchestra complementing the overall progress and ambiance. Good effort on not stumbling into wall-bursting hollering as well.

Dario Campeotto Angelique
[Denmark]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdhVPUcimAM" data-time="

Dario sings a smooth waltz with respectable finesse and composure. A very proficent performance all in all, but I think this year has, astonishingly enough, better songs than this one.

Laila Kinnunen Valoa ikkunassa
[Finland]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMu44znU-8A" data-time="

A very soothing and gentle song with a discernible flair of Finnish melancholy. One of the better debuts, even if I were to discount my bias. Also quite the feat to pen an original song when I know that a vast majority of Finnish songs at the time were translated covers of other popular songs.

Ljiljana Petrovi Neke davne zvezde
[Yugoslavia]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0F7t2NFx8Ew" data-time="

I can almost sense the longing woe condensing into vapors in Ljiljana's voice as she sings this silky piece that evokes images of a smoky cabaret in a film noir.

Conchita Bautista Estando contigo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPOP5gTnGcY" data-time="

Finland was somber, Yugoslavia was wistful, and Spain is commendably effervescent. Seems like each newcomer exhibits aspects that presumably could be typical of their nations, and more than that, I appreciate these great debuts for bringing something fresh and unique to the contest.

Jean-Paul Mauric Printemps, avril carillonne
[France]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ci-6Sl2jO_4" data-time="

Jean-Paul definitely seems to enjoy casin himself into the flows of the song. The delightfully cheerful and carefree melody puts a smile on my face and draws me in despite the ridiculous binge-bonges.

Jean-Claude Pascal Nous les amoureux
[Luxemburg]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPSYrOQEkHQ" data-time="

As usual, French is the language for suave romance ballads, and Jean-Claude is certainly no slouch here. Nous les amoureux has an undertone of determination and tension, and ends up being one of the bests of this year. Fun tidbit: the song's about forbidden romance. The most popular guess about its kind? Gay romance. Jean-Claude was a bachelor all his life as well...

Nora Brockstedt Sommer i Palma
[Norway]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5i_BCD46-fo" data-time="

Who said Finland and Yugoslavia were melancholic? Norway has tapped into the source of sadness itself to distill a graceful song so wistful and somber, that it traverses on the border of being haunting. A most beautiful song worth remembering.
