Without ice should be the default option tbh

1) The ice compartments in those fountain machines are a germ magnet, from what I understand.
2) The drinks are cold enough already when they're dispensed.
3) The ice isn't really going to keep it colder much longer; it'll just melt and water down the drink.

That said I don't really care enough to specifically request no ice, I just won't put ice in it if I'm at a place where they give you a cup to fill yourself.

I like light ice since I don't drink very fast and if it has full ice it'll be watered down and gross like halfway through.

Where do you people live where no ice is cold enough? And the ice melting should make very little difference in the time it takes to finish the drink. If you plan on taking over an hour to finish it, it will be warm and not good by that point.

Getting no ice from a fountain tastes like ass. Fountains are calibrated to account for ice melting, figuring into the formula.

I don't get the obsession with ice. How cheap are American restaurants that they can't give you 2 more cents of soda or 5 more cents worth of milk in your latte? Every place PACKS the cup full of ice... even worse is when they pack it with crushed ice. I used to ask for "light ice" and they'd still fill 50% of the cup with ice. Now I have to say "EXTRA LIGHT on the ice" just to get it down to 25%. Like, god damn, it shouldn't be this difficult to get a reasonable amount of ice in your drink.

I honestly think it comes down to "this is how it's always been, so this is how we serve it". Is it really only an American thing?

It's definitely not because the restaurant is too cheap, or else they wouldn't let their employees drink from the soda machine whenever they want (it's been this way at every restaurant I worked at).

To your second, I've never encountered that much ice traveling abroad, although more than once in Europe they brought bread to the table without asking, then charged my party for each slice we ate.

I'm a thirsty boi in more ways than one. 9 times outta 10 I'm gonna finish the drink before it has a chance to reach an undrinkably warmer temp, regardless of the cup size. I often times order a 44oz drink and need a refill before ive got my food cuz I'm a gulper....like gulp(x4) every trip to the straw

They cant refuse you and theyre forced to give you more drink. However I think the soda from fast food machines is largely terrible unless theyre using those freestyle machines or are Sonic, who specialize in drinks.
