The bar exam consists of two parts, a general part (MBE) and a state specific part so it really varies by state. NY, CA, NJ, FL all supposedly have tougher exams. I took and passed FL so its the only one I really know about.

The material isn't difficult by itself but the scope of subjects that are tested is difficult. There is just a huge amount of material that you have to be able to recall depending on what is asked. You learn about some of it in law school but some of it you don't. The state specific materials vary and in some instances conflict with the MBE materials and you have to remember that. So for example, opinion testimony by witnesses is treated one way on the MBE and another way in FL so you have to be able to address the differences if it comes up on either exam.

The MBE is only multiple choice and the state specific areas are usually a combination of multiple choice and a written portion. It might have essays or practical components that would require you to draft a document. Its all timed and a giant pressure chamber.

You can look up passage rates by state and you will see that in most cases the majority of the people taking it do pass but sometimes it isn't a huge majority. Its a lot of pressure and not an enjoyable experience but if you did well on the LSAT and put your study time in you will probably do well on the Bar.
