SantaRPG expressed his distaste for the game and most people assured DR1 is most definitely actually flawed. I Tried giving him some tips and he gave it a second shot, saying it went from "Unplayable trash" to just "Trash"

and the topic inspired me to pop in my Xbone copy and I proceeded to get the zombie genocider achievement

then we discussed that for a few posts before it purged

I remember loving the sandbox aspect of DR1 but disliking the need to constantly be on the move with the story so that I didn't get a ton of time for experimentation.

It's a philosophy I just have a hard time subscribing to; I have a compulsion in games to immediately start ticking off objectives, and I like to experiment as I go. It's a double-edged sword.

The upshot was that EVENTUALLY I really got into the game.

I agree with DR being flawed, but once you figure out how you're supposed to play it I think it's still a super fun game.

DR2 fixes almost all of the bad problems with the first, the biggest being survivor AI and is the pinnacle of the series. Plus Tiger Bodyguard, fuck yeah.

DR3 was bad.

DR4 made my cry as a grown, adult man because of how disconnected from everything they had become.

It only becomes fun when you have all of the blueprints and you're on max level

Like, DR1, it might be too much to ask of someone to "get used to the shittiness and it becomes rewarding"

But asking someone to fucking 100% the game before you can have fun?

Thats just utter ridiculousness

and again, thats BEFORE you even get to all of the flaws it already has

Just got to my third playthrough right now, I'm around level 12

On my second playthrough I rescued a lot of people up until I met a guy who shot himself and then I couldn't get his wife to join me, don't know what to do there next time

I finally ended up dying to hundreds of guys wearing masks that explode when you shoot them when trying to rescue a lady out of a box.

Is there a way to save at the base with brad and nicole? Because I tried and could not figure it out, and it's responsible for the majority of my lost progress.

and yes, infact the game shows you you can sleep in the little bed\couch at the safe house when you start the game

she won't kill herself like this guy does

for a game that is about replaying it over and over, the beginning is kind of a huge slog.

is there a way to save anyone at the beginning of the game?

No. You can even literally carry them up the stairs and the game will still kill them off

you can at least skip over the camera segment when frank is arriving into town

Ok successfully finished case 2. I love how the game is like "please just wait here until this specific time or you will miss the quest" I love a game where you can just spend 5 minutes looking at your watch as part of the gameplay

I really don't know if I'm starting to like the game, or if I'm just becoming determined to beat this game because I hate it so much.

Alright so I've made it all the way to case 7

saved a pretty decent chunk of people too!

now that I'm level 32 and have enough space in my inventory for tons of wine this game is starting to become a little easy

jesus christ that was intense. made it out with one health

After getting all the bombs I decided to make my way out of the maintenance tunnels into the mall

only to find out that's not allowed, you can only go out the exit they choose for you.

I still hate this game but running to the exit with one health while carlitos was trying ram his truck into me might beat the storm king from demon souls for most intense video game moment, so thats worth something.

Part of exploring is having already been in the tunnels and finding the key Otis dropped which let you use the exits that let you go into the mall

Well I beat it.

All scoops, 36 survivors, level 42.

This game is incredible, I have been playing this game with a dropped jaw. Without exaggeration, I don't think I've played a game with this many flaws since Lunar Dragon Song.

It's a fun game, there are so many enjoyable moments and the concept is sound, but it almost feels like the game is intentionally bad just to annoy the player. It's like Dead Rising was a perfect game but a time traveler came from the future to make it as bad as possible. Frank West seems to have been scientifically crafted to be the worst character ever, Otis' phone calls (particularly in boss fights, like the bomb fight) made me want to die. NPCs take a full second to turn, and don't seem to possess the ability to run and turn at the same time, which is awesome because 70% of traveling will be through a narrow bathroom hallway that their AI was not built to handle, and all of them need to navigate a labyrinth of shelves to get to the elevator to the base. Running speed is atrocious, hit detection seems random? Survivors require you to stand next to them for a full minute retalking to them over and over. Some survivors have weapons in their hands when you meet them but wont take weapons when you try to give them. Also, Frank seems to move considerably faster when he's carrying someone so that's weird.

I could go on and on. It was a masterpiece of flaws, and I respect the game to give me a somewhat enjoyable experience DESPITE these flaws, and I respect that.

Thanks for everyone for encouraging me to give it another chance.

but yea, with your new found knowledge and skills, the next step is to see if you can do a playthrough and save ALL of the survivors.

BUT, I consider it a small miracle that you came back to the game at all

so I won't push it

Like i said before, give DR2 a shot sometime

it isn't without it's own flaws, but I guarantee you that it'll look like the GOAT if you compare it to DR1

I think it's an incredible feat if a game can have as many flaws as Lunar DS, and still turn out even remotely playable. The fact that it manages to be fun despite all of them is downright incredible.

it's quite honestly tempting! Do I have to do the cases to save the survivors? Because those were my least favorite part.

I forgot it was just a "favor" quest

I misremembered it and thought the gun was one of the things that got her to join you, along with Isabella being in your party

but yea, its just a favor. Sometimes if you fail a favor, the survivor leaves (and even sometimes takes everyone in the room he or she was in) and dies

I never failed that one so I don't know if she does that

I dunno if you noticed but there are actually survivors out there that Otis never see you just have to run into them

SOMETIMES the story missions are around the areas they're in and you just kinda bump into them

IIRC near the beginning, you're in the ...south mall I Think? Theres a guy stuck in a store called "in the closet" I think?

He appears when you finish a story mission in the same area. Your only clue is that theres no zombies around and they're all grouped up in that store, but if you don't know to look, you'll just run back to base without a second thought to explore.

and theres good ol Kendal, he spawns in the north mall around the same time you're escorting an injured Isabella. So he escorts YOU back.

but then theres random ones like the 3 people that are shacked up in the gun store on day 3. With everything going on, you might not even decide to check out the gun store that late in the game so they'll just die without you ever knowing they are there.

And the worst part is, the game only "produces" 8 survivors at a time. Even the ones that die instantly count. maybe you've noticed that sometimes you get a call immediately after you save survivors.

Thats because their specific time and event has already triggered and you cleared up enough of the survivor queue to actually activate it.

Each survivors and their missions show up at a specific time. If its delayed, its because you haven't finished the others yet

This is also a reason why you never run into unmarked Survivors either, you have too many scoops up. So doing the story missions that kinda guide you into them won't spawn them there when it was supposed to and throws everything out of whack.

so this game even has a splash of Majora's Mask in it. But like most things in this game, they pull it off weird.
