It just didn't really feel like it had any love when it came to making the film. Felt very generic and formulaic. Can't give exact reasons though why I didn't like it.

Yeah, Darth Maul was never part of the Empire. In fact, he pretty much hates everyone now, given the Jedi crippled him and the Sith discarded him.
