I liked (loved) Mario Oddyssey, but I will concede that I'd prefer a gameplay style more akin to SM64 or the Galaxy games where the levels are open to explore, even reward exploration, but you have a clear objective

galaxy 1 was hardly open Ive never played 2 but I assume its tbe same. it was more like a linear trek to your star

I mean, that kinda literally describes every world in Odyssey...

You're given an objective in each world, but if you choose you can go off the path you can find rewards like other moons.

What exactly is the difference?

The main story with objective is like 10 hours of gameplay. There's 880 moons the vast majority requiring just free roam.

It's the total opposite of Galaxy which makes it divisive since Galaxy was the last 'real' 3D mario game

This. It was more of the older stage-based style than 64 and Sunshine. I don't know how you can view Galaxy as having openness on the level of 64, while also thinking Odyssey doesn't.

I played the first 2-3 levels and was super bored. That's a really bad sign for a Mario game. Usually the first few levels are endlessly replayable.

This is the problem with open world games.

I disagree. The platforming sandbox fits Mario really well imo. I'm not sure I'd want every subsequent game to follow the Odyssey formula, but I wouldn't mind them revisiting it

I mean, it's not like it's "open world" in the sense of Farcry or Elder Scrolls or whatever. It's just large platforming areas.
