what makes weapon durability "strategic"

The same way that having limited ammo for guns does in games.

Except guns have perks and traits. BotW weapons more or less function the same and there's like 6 types total.

I'm convinced people who complain about the durability system must really suck at the game. Some of you act like losing your weapons is a game-ending glitch. It's not, and that rarely, if ever, happened to me. Usually when it does get close to happening, whatever I'm fighting only needs a couple bomb blasts to finish off. Or I can use a bow, which is cool, because in previous Zelda games I'd pretty much only think of bows as a puzzle tool and occasional sniping weapon.

I think people are underestimating how much the durability leads to creative combat approaches and gives you incentive to explore the physics. I'm not sure if people would have discovered as many little things if they didn't have to worry about weapons breaking. That wouldn't have been much fun anyway - combat was serviceable in previous Zelda games, but I was definitely getting tired of walking up to everything and mashing the sword button, which is what BotW combat would have also become for most people if they didn't have to think about durability.

That being said I don't think it was perfect, some kind of durability meter and limited crafting couldn't have hurt, but it's still better than having hundreds of weapons in the game that all become useless the second you get one in the same class with higher damage
