I mean, to have your creation ripped apart by people. I saw on reddit they really went all out attacking a Battlefield V dev.

Not to mention devs arent that respected. Devs are constantly being let go and being put out of a job, or being mistreated by higher ups.

Its really brutal to be a dev.

Id be on the verge of being suicidal in their position. All of that pressure and shit. Man.

Not really. Make better games. The Battlefield and COD games aren't really inspired pieces of art. They're manufacturing entertainment and shouldn't take criticism from a bunch of random online nerds seriously.

Yeah they have it pretty bad overall.

Pretty much any behind the scenes story seems like an awful experience and so much of the gamer community is incredibly toxic to interact with.

It must be incredibly rewarding when it all works out but even in those cases you get several lower level employees getting laid off.

I feel bad for indie developers. AAA devs can cry themselves to sleep on their gold body pillows. They've been treating gamers like shit for wanting more from their games for the past decade pichu

I don't think most AAA developers are rich. They're just people with jobs who do what they're told lol.

For most of them, yes.

Publishers dicking them around. Console makers as well. And the public at large pulling on them every which way.

It becomes increasingly needlessly expensive to make games and it's largely not for the sake of even making better games but just tech wank to entice the public into buying the newest shiny thing. Facilitating a very toxic consumer culture that in turn makes the mere act of making modern video games way more trying than it needs to be.

Sony and Microsoft and Nintendo all are seldom acting in a way that serves game development specifically, and gaming. They more often are doing things that make both of those things have a harder time living healthily. Publishers sooner see a product than the art and human work involved in it and this informs how they treat everything and so their actions are poison to game development as well.

Then you have the people bitching about every stupid thing, like people who don't even have an interest in the game still demanding it cater to their specific views of decency.

There are devs that are super scummy though.

Most EA game designers make around $100k a year, give or take a few thousand. Not saying they're rich but they're definitely not struggling. That being said I don't think any individual designer should be harassed for the missteps of their employer.

I just paid for a year of EA Access this morning tho so eh

How is it 2018 and there are still people that unironically believe that all the thousands of programmers putting in 80 hour work weeks of crunch into the latest generic ubisoft open world game are going home to literal ivory towers in their brand new ferraris?

I think it depends on the position.

But you've got long working weeks and pretty awful job security so they certainly earn that money even if the game is crappy.

Definitely. Publishers/studios cause them to do all sorts of things they wouldn't normally do with their game, impose time constraints and treat them like crap. The downside is that to get a really well made game, you need the time and money to do it and that's got to come from somewhere but it is surprising how often the bigger studios turn down good ideas/throw out almost finished projects and generally do things that only hurt themselves and the devs.

not really. feel the same way as i do about people who work on movies. all of the artists, technicians, engineers who dont get much credit.
ive learned that while it is an extremely stressful job with lofty ambitious deadlines guiding it, you're still getting paid a lot of money to work on a game. pretty neat. not much to feel sorry for there, regardless of the final product.

I think people take their anger to extreme levels but I don't think EA really deserve the benefit of the doubt.

I'm sure BFV will be fine though. EA's biggest enemy is apathy.

Depends. I think a lot of AAA devs get a lot of unnecessary shit for people just doing their jobs.

But there's also some devs who really deserve the shit they get. Like Yandere Dev.

I think this is where most of the problems come from-people confuse devs with publishers. If it's indie then the blame stops with one person/group but with a AAA title the publisher usually farms out the work and are ultimately responsible for the quality of the finished product because it's what they have requested, not necessarily what the devs intended it to be.

Most of the time, yeah.

The majority do what they do because they want to make something people can enjoy.

Then you have a whole slew of angry/bitter people who treat them worse than the scum of the earth. Makes me surprised people still even go into the profession honestly at times.
