How much longer should I be pushing this thing to its limit here?

I'm afraid it'll explode and ruin my man cave basement though.

It's not leaking. The color of my water is fine. Seems like my hot water in the shower doesn't last as long as it did when I first moved in though.

IIRC the average lifetime for a water heater is like 10 years

Consider replacing it, modern appliances will be so much more efficient.

This.

Normally people say if it ain't broke dont fix it.

But the lifespan of a water heater is 8-10 years at best on average. If you got 20 years and over, consider yourself lucky.

Go do yourself a favor and buy a new water heater because that's a ticking time bomb.

My previous water heater was 30 years old. Only replaced it because I needed to get a new furnace.

You can perform a few basic checks to ensure everything is working properly. At this point in its lifespan, you should be preparing to replace it. Typically corrosion will get to it by now. If it hasnt already, it likely will soon.

The old one at my house was around 20 years old when I got it, died at 23. If it's working no need to replace, just keep your eye on it. Once you get the smallest of leaks then it's time to replace.

Water Heater explosions are very rare.
The only way it's gonna explode is if there was some kinda kinda gas leak and the pilot/burner was exposed to said gas leak...
Alternatively, your water heater could blow up if "water pressure" accumulated over time...
but most water heaters after the 1970's/1980's were required to have a "shut off" device/safety valve...

~$500 for traditional, ~$1000 for the mountable kind. But the mountable kind may need other pipe conversions so could be really expensive.

I'd listen to that warning and replace it. 20 plus years is a good enough run.

Instant hot tankless heaters need to be piped differently for CO exhaust, so yeah, if your house is roughed in for a traditional tank water heater you"d have to rough in newer venting which can be very expensive.

I recently bought a new Rheem hot water heater and it was $700 with a 12 year warranty.
