"Oh no there's not internet signal and they cut the phone lines and blocked the tunnels! Now no one can leave the county!"

"The hills aren't that high... and everyone has helicopters.... Let's just leave and call the National Guard within 20 minutes..."

"...No."

____

"OMG this Rookie is killing everyone and messing up our entire cult! I'm so mad! Let's easily capture him over and over and over and over and over and over again and then put him in easily escapable unsupervised locations so he can escape 20 times"

"Why don't we just kill the fucker?...."

"That's not what God wants or something..."

"So.... Why do we spend all day trying to kill the fucker?"

I mean in Far Cry 1 the tone of the game was absolutely goofy but even so you were an agent on an island with no way off until you stopped the Robo Zombies.

In Far Cry 2 you were a gun for hire in the middle of a civil war where everyone who tried to leave got shot at and part of the plot was the Heart of Darkness you losing your mind just to continue the war.

In 3 you're some tourst stuck on a slaver's island with no way off and your entire plan is to build a boat but rescue your friends first. Sure Vaas also captured and let you go over and over too but it was better written and more natural with his insanity.

In 4 sure there was a "Why don't you just leave?" question but you wanted to scatter your mom's ashes and got caught up in the civil war.

In 5 there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason for why anyone does anything beyond "Cuz it's how the game works." that feels really weird considering the dark themes of torture and drugs and multilation and real world themes of nuclear war and fanatical beliefs. Hell all 4 main villains seem to be near identical to each other.

It's really jarring, like half the writers were trying to do a dark drama and the other half were doing a goofy arcade game and they never talked to each other.

Christ at one point you're captured instantly (for the third time by that character) and are shoved in a cage for 7 days on your hands and knees to eat dog food while they fuck with your mind... That's just dumb on so many levels.

I still Far-Cry 3 is the best. The gameplay hasn't really changed much since 2 but 3 had the most coherant and best written story.

don't they shoot you down if you try to leave?

also there's like a world war going on in-universe iirc so america isn't very tuned in to the whole situation even if they did manage to escape and call. not that you still don't have to suspend your belief a whole lot but yknow

No it just says you can't continue

Sure but when ever facet of your plot requires you to roll with it and yet take it seriously, then everyone involved looks like an idiot.

Every other Far Cry explains why you can't leave and why the villains are doing what they are doing it's just not "We gotta continue the game that you are playing."

And that's bad, well written stories don't need to do that. Also no, a world war doesn't mean that the nation would ignore this, they even talk about getting the national guard in the prologue.
