i believe it's 16 stars that each require at least one A press, with the total A presses being 25. but that's only for 120 star. the game is now beatable with 70 stars and 0 A presses (though only on Wii VC apparently. that sucks).

Holy shit my entire life has been leading up to this moment.

And yeah it's now that 70 star is beatable with 0 A presses, but what FL means I believe is just that now the final boss can be beaten with 0 A presses. Previously there was no way to clear this level without using A presses which meant there was no way to even get to the final Bowser level/fight without using 1 A Press here.

as far as i know, the only ways up that staircase are having 70 stars or backwards long jumping. and BLJ would obviously involve a lot of A presses.

stored vertical speed, yeah, from a lava boost. you don't need to do it but it reduces the wait time from 8 days to 3 days.
