They are just gonna buy drugs

If you're just getting by you're not obligated to give away the little you have.

Just plain don't wanna give away your hard earned money.

If I'm not in a rush, I'll often take the bums money so they don't buy any drugs, actually.

But if I'm in a rush I just tell them to get a job and kick dust at them .

I wouldn't recommend giving a stranger money and instead buy something for them. Like buy a homeless person something to eat. At least you know that the money you would have gave didn't go to something else.

Waiting in port authority for my bus.

A homeless dude is there begging for money for food. Screaming "ladies and gentlemen anyone got some spare money so I can get food!"
A woman had a sandwich, untouched and wrapped. She offered it to him, he took it and opened it. Smelled it, said "what is this? Nah..." and handed it back.

Now, we all know most, if not all, of these homeless want booze or drugs. But it was sad, comical and astounding to see in person. That someone begging for food, got actual food and declined it.

If you give food to the ones who do drugs, you're still enabling them to do drugs as now the money they get from other people doesn't need to go towards food.

Always best to volunteer at a shelter or donate to a charity that supports them with rehab/mental health.

Can anyone find that video on youtube where a guy and his camera crew gave a bunch of money to a homeless guy then followed him to see what he was gonna do and turns out he bought a bunch of food and shared it with the other homeless in the park? Im on my phone and i dont know how to get it

But its obvious that many homeless will just buy drugs, no denying that

If they ask for it for food / bus money / etc, I offer to directly purchase them food / a bus ticket / etc. 9 times out of 10, they're like "oh nah nevermind".

I did have one case where a homeless guy came up to me and straight up said, "Can I have a dollar, I'm a bit short for my next box of beer". Guess what happened next. I gave him the dollar, because of his honesty.

I told you the alternative of volunteering or donating to charities that will help them in the long run, I'm being logical.

You are using your emotions, you are most likely harming the addicted ones (as you appear to be struggling, I'm only talking about addicts, not all homeless people). If you want to do more harm than good to feel good about yourself, be my guest. But don't attempt to make out to me that you're doing good when you aren't.

Its not my job to play moral police to homeless people. If someone is desperate enough to ask complete strangers for money then its none of my goddamn business what they do with the dollar or pocket change I give them. I used to ride the subway every day for work (any time from 5:00 AM to well past midnight) and 90% of the people that said they needed a train ticket or food/coffee were more than happy to accept a ticket or food/coffee if I offered to buy it for them.

Sometimes people who were obviously drugged out or drunk would sit down next to me and talk to me and I would take my headphones off and talk to them. People dehumanize and demonize these people all day and sometimes they just need someone to give them attention and treat them like the humans they are. Oftentimes I would offer them coffee or whatever breakfast bar I had on me and they usually politely refused without asking for anything else. Only one time an old lady asked do you want to keep those after complimenting my gloves the whole 15-20 minutes we were talking lol. They were kind of worn out and it was cold as hell outside so I gave them to her.

It can be stressful and sometimes intimidating to interact with people like that, but deep down theyre just people who are having a hard time. Regardless of what got them there, literally every one of us is likely only 3-4 bad decisions or tragic events away from being in that same spot. Have some humanity.

Yes giving money and such to people livin out in the streets does more harm.

Because you totally know they have to be a drug addict. That must be the only reason, right?

Try to be less of a judgemental asshole to people that are less fortunate than you. Just because you try to reason with your shit logic with by not helping them Im actually doing good doesnt mean its correct.

You must really hate people on welfare. I bet all that money that they dont spend on food goes straight to drug dealers.

If people solicit me for money, I don't give it. If they initially solicit for food, I tend to buy them food. I have at occasions created a "care package" with those draw string backpacks that include hygiene products, water bottles, protein-dense non-perishable foods, packages of socks, etc. If you buy these things in bulk you can make a half dozen or so for relatively cheap. And I'll hand these out if I'm at a stoplight where someone has a sign, usually for the women or men who are older. I'm less likely to assist younger, able-bodied men. I recognize even in a state of being able to work there may be barriers to them securing a job if they don't have shelter or a means to shave/shower/etc, so I recognize it's kind of an implicit bias.

I realize this doesn't create any impact on a systemic scale, but I like to think the care packages make their lives a little more comfortable for a short period. Any one of us can get the perfect storm of events that lead to homelessness.

Or, you are helping to support them in a safe environment, prompting them to want to seek further help instead of showing them they can just stay out on the street because they will be fed there.
