In a somewhat scathing verdict, the famously racy novelist said that men also cry 'all the time'.

She added that women wear short skirts but have 'do not touch tattooed across their knees' and said she was 'worried' about the effect the Me Too campaign may have on views of courtship.

Speaking at the Hay literary festival yesterday, the 81-year-old said: 'I have one adorable gay friend whose lover died. He's just started going on the internet now.

'It's all married men wanting to have gay affairs. Do you think men are so terrified of women, it's safer to get [it] on with their own sex?'

The author said that men's behaviour was 'very cyclical' recalling how men cried and grew beards in the Shakespearean era, whereas her father and late husband Leo did neither.

'Men cry all the time now and they have beards,' she said.

Describing how campaigns against sexual harassment such as Me Too have affected relationships, Mrs Cooper said: 'One lovely man said 'I can't flirt any more'. You have a mini skirt up to here, then 'do not touch' tattooed across your knees.'

Asked about the impact of such changing attitudes on her characters such as caddish serial seducer Rupert Campbell-Black, who will also feature in her latest novel Tackle she said: 'I'm worried about that.'

However, despite her comments, Mrs Cooper conceded that modern men are better at trying to make relationships work.

'I think a lot of the young men I know love their wives and are determined to make their marriages stay,' she said. 'But being happily married doesn't stop you falling in love with other people.'

Addressing how the internet has changed the landscape for dating, Mrs Cooper sounded a note of caution about the dangers of meeting someone you found online.

She told the audience: 'I don't know how many of you go online, but the idea of going online... I have a bad hip and I can't run away from a mass murderer.'

^ accounts for why you see much more out people nowadays. Being gay is no longer seen as a bad thing, so people, both men and women, are much more comfortable with no longer hiding.

the way to combat the "gay is a choice" kind of statement is to ask the guy/girl if the only reason they're not blowing a dude or eating out a woman is because they didnt feel like doing it this morning

Well it isn't just 1 crazy old lady that thinks like this. You'd be surprised at the number of people that are pretty ignorant to homosexuality and bisexuality.

Right, but most of the people who think like that old lady are older people themselves. And most of them are dying out.

The younger generation is vastly different with respect to how they regard gay people. They're a lot less ignorant.

I could never figure out why the whole choice thing mattered. Nor the natural argument for that matter.

I mean nature is screwed up to begin with. I literally went to the zoo a few months ago and the giraffes all took turns coming to the corner closest to me and Mrs. DevsBro, staring us straight in the eye and peeing like a gallon of pee right there where we had to back up to avoid getting splashed. What a standard to strive for.

And what difference does it make if you can choose? Seems to me people just made up these lame half-effort excuses because they didn't want to admit that they chose their stance because of God's Word tbh.

Not sure if this is meant to be self-aware or not, but I'm sure there are men on this very board who would unironically agree with you. The onus is no longer on them for not "getting a woman". They can now project that onto the women because of these movements.
