Almost no footage of this year, as the only known tapes were destroyed in a fire. Hence, the still images, some of which are unflattering. Anyhow, Portugal made their first appearance, and Sweden had a hissy fit or something and opted out of this year's Eurovision.

Without further ado, here are my brief opinions on the songs. I'll use the current-day score system of 1-8 and 10 and 12, but also a separate 1-5 rating, since a winner's trophy doesn't mean the song's good. It only means it's the best of the bunch. Moreover, the song's actual standing is enclosed with brackets.

Harmonious and refined, but sadly squanders a perfect opportunity at the midpoint to ascend into something amazing. Thereafter, the song feels very run-of-the-mill and boring.

Matt Monro I Love the Little Things
[United Kingdom]

I'll be blunt: It's a shame and a disappointment that Matt Monro's considerable talent is wasted on this upbeat but terribly shallow and uninspired song.

Portugal debuts with a melancholic but passionate crooner that's technically flawless, but doesn't really have an apex and ends when I expected another verse. The weakest of the numerous good songs of this year.

[Switzerland]
An enjoyable and mostly mellow and gentle but surpriseless throwback to the 1950s.

A semi-powerful ballad that's rough around the edges. The performance at the end felt clumsy.

Preciously calming, tender, and warm, albeit uneventful. Honestly, I feel a little sorry putting this so low and out of the points, but 1964 is a remarkably strong year.

The song offers nothing new or revolutionary, but compensates for it by being beautiful and tranquil and having a singer whose voice is admirably wonderful.

This is a dramatic but tender ballad. Or not. It soon changes gears completely and becomes a very wild and carnivalesque piece. Bemusing, but captivating.

An old-fashioned waltz put together and performed professionally to create a classy sound. A couple instances of unintentionally hilarious Danish and a somewhat brash ending mar it slightly.

That first image of her makes her look hilariously daft. Anyhow, this has a driving beat, nice vocals, and no disharmonious timbres or chords.

Surprisingly many jazz pieces this year. This one is crafted and performed superbly and is quite merry and catchy. Curiously, Lasse has a pronounced Swedish accent.

[Luxemburg]
Commendably unique and feels spot-on to be played as the title cards of a Western are superimposed over establishing shots of a dusty frontier town, but is also deceptively repetitive thanks to an almost imperceptibly minor and gradual progression.

Balongen er mitt symbol? Is Arne Pinkie Pie? Be as it may, Arne and the orchestra work in seamless harmony in this easygoing but chipper waltz. Bong!

Almost touchingly gorgeous. Such a great voice and a sedate ambiance. The piano tapping in the refrains is a bit passe, and the ending is a remnant from the 1950s, but they thankfully don't ruin this fantastic jazz-esque ballad.

Udo Jrgens Warum nur, warum?

Beautiful, unforgettable, and astonishing. This might be one of the finest songs in the Eurovision yet. Fun fact: Matt Monro's rendition, Walk Away, was a certified hit in 1964 and one of his most succesfull songs.

Gigliola Cinquetti Non ho l'et
[Italy]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QlA3Xd9aAo" data-time="

Unable to have two songs share the first spot, I struggled for a good while on deciding which one deserved the trophy: Udo's magnificent piano serenade, or Gigilola's mellifluous yet dramatic ballad. The composition, performance, and emotional appeal of each are highly exceptional. As an aside, that the only footage left of 1964's Eurovision is of Gigilola's performance is strangely sad and haunting. But that in itself makes this song a tiny bit more special, doesn't it?
