Absolutely it is, but like every genre, fighting games has subgenres. Saying smash is in the "traditional fighting game" genre is laughable. It's 100% a fighting game but it's by no means a traditional fighter. I'd personally call its genre a "platform fighter"

It's a game whose primary gameplay element is characters fighting each other. No matter how unorthodox it is compared to others, of course it's a fighting game.
