In the manga, and thus the original anime, he commits constant homocide using the cards as he's a sociopath. Not so much when the series we all know came out.

Adaptional Villain:
Ryuk (Live Action Death Note)

Obviously if you've seen the anime, you know Light getting the death note was coincidental and Ryuk just acted as a mediator, sat around and observed Light. In the Live Action he is basically a manipulative bastard, having specifically targetted Light to get the Death Note and like talks him into killing people with it.
