Yeah that scene was a little hammy, and I also thought the dude got over his girlfriend's death a little too fast, even though they were a crew of scoundrels, but overall I thought it was good and I want more of these side stories.

Which is explained in the movie with a direct line from him, so at least it's explained.

Princess Leia was making jokes about Luke's height right after her home planet was obliterated. Mourning does not seem to be a common trait in SW.
