No the goal is to own monopolies on certain properties and take advantage of everyone else. Not buy the entire board.

But you get the other players' properties when they go bankrupt so the last person standing will most likely own the entire board.

IIRC, statistically the red and orange properties are the best ones to buy; jail means players are more likely to land on those than the others.

It goes to an auction and if no one buys it the bank just owns it again and can be purchased as normal.

Red also has a go-to chance card. I usually do "bad" deals to get monopolies with go-to-es.

It's kinda sad that I played that game throughout my whole childhood and I never knew that rule until well into adulthood.

Only if a player goes bankrupt due to a fine or tax. If they owe another player, which is what happens 99% of the time, the owed player gets all the bankrupted player's properties.

(Then again everybody also prolongs the game to infinity by putting all the tax money on Free Parking even though by the "official" rules they're not supposed to, so I wouldn't doubt some people play that everything goes to the bank on every bankruptcy, either.)

The standard game isn't exactly short either. The free parking rule is just more fun.

People also don't play that every property you land on goes to auction if the person who lands there doesn't want to pay the ticket price.

Someone has to buy it during the auction.
