I don't believe in ideological litmus tests for friends. Plus the word "racist" has been tossed around so carelessly these days as to lose all meaning while, ironically enough, not being applied to *actual* examples of racism such the pro-segregation anti-cultural appropriation movement which has the same "keep them separate, keep them pure" attitude that's scarily reminiscent of the KKK.

Plus if it's a matter of just "finding out," it means that they aren't overtly racist which suggests that it's probably just a liberal whose problematic views regarding race drive their leftward-leaning tendencies (ie, viewing minorities as being inherently inferior to whites). Anything else I imagine I'd know long beforehand.

I had a friend who started making racist remarks kind of out of the blue. i was pretty put off by it when he started doing it, so I told him to knock it off, and he did, at least around me. We stayed friends at least until he moved away.

Depends on the severity of it. If by "racist" you mean making an off-color joke once in a while then of course not. I would actually respect that he doesn't follow society's norms and censor himself. If he is an actual racist (in other words believing one person is better then another based solely on their race) then no.

My GF is totally racist. She has a very strong dislike of Hispanic people. But it's funny and cute because she is Hispanic.

Best friend status is something that would take a long time to achieve with me. Someone wouldn't be able to make it to ththat level without me knowing they were racist.

Being a little bit prejudiced, based on first impressions, doesn't automatically make everyone a racist in some way.

A racist is someone who either shows, thinks, or feels that other "races" (of the same human species) are somehow inferior to their own in any way.

If someone is my friend then they mean a lot to me. I was friends for a long time with a person that hated men. I didn't like it, but I put up with it because angry people need friends the most.

Presuming we're talking actual racism (as in, thinking less of other races and discriminating against them), and not just making tasteless jokes in appropriate contexts (because who doesn't like that?), I wouldn't exactly dump them immediately, but that'd definitely be a source of strain that would probably cause us to drift apart if they didn't fix themselves.

It depends to what extent. If they're just making jokes but don't harbour any militant ill will (as in not advocating hurting people or boycotting their businesses solely for that reason, etc.), then I could generally tolerate it.

I managed to maintain friendships with hardcore religious people during my years as a very aggressive atheist. Some members of my family that I love(d) hold grudges based on race, but it doesn't make me want to cut them loose because it doesn't affect me; I'm treated well... Actions >>>> words, anyway.

In spite of how much I "hate people", I'm skilled at finding the good in most of them. Regardless of where I think I belong morally, the fact of the matter is I've only ever disconnected myself from one person for their racism, some kid I was briefly friends with when I was 11.

My grandma and I were like Happy Gilmore and his, and pretty much nothing could've swayed me against her. She was very anti-Semitic (ironic, given my reference), to the point is just laugh at the absurdity of her claims, but she was still special to me.

My best friend is kinda racist. She always says, 'You know I'm not trying to be racist but...' then says something that is totally stereotypical or prejudiced. I always call her out on it, but it doesn't affect our friendship.

Unrelated, but I also found out that one of my friends is a flat-earther. >.> He's a great guy but I have to avoid certain topics when talking to him if i don't wanna bang my head against the wall.

anyway, they are your supposed best friend and they never told you something very significant like "oh Im racist have been racist" might mean your friendship isn't as great a friendship as you might think.
