I watched Unsane tonight. The film had an interesting look since it was all shot on an iPhone. Claire Foy was really good. It's a shame she won't be on The Crown anymore due to the time jump, but she'll have The Girl in the Spider's Web later this year.

I didn't really like the turn it took in the third act, but it still held my interest. Definitely worth a watch if you want to see a newer B movie from home

I watched trollhunter on netflix I don't know how it took me so long to discover it but if you like monster movies it's great. The trolls are awesome and look to be inspired by john bauers art.

Trollhunter is great, I watched it a few years ago, enjoyed it a lot. One of my favorite "found footage" style films.

I think it and Chronicle are the only ones off the top of my head I truly enjoyed a lot.

Ocean's 8 was alright I guess. I like there to be some really tense moments and twists along the way, and this heist movie was severely lacking there. Sandra Bullock's plan was a little too perfect. There weren't really any weak spots in the cast and the extravagant costumes at the Met Gala were nice.

I've only ever seen The Incredibles in a classroom setting (aka nap time), so I'm gonna watch that before the sequel on Thursday. Just noticed my theater will have 5 showings before Friday

I just watched a really weird, dark, and trippy, but kinda cool and interesting Soviet era Estonian animated short film called Surr Toll, about the Estonian mythical god, Suur Tll (Toell the Great).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDEI06J00nk" data-time="

Only around 14 minutes, I'd say it's worth a watch just for the "what the hell am I watching" factor.

If any of you guys watch it, I'd be curious to hear what you guys think about it. The music in particular is really unsettling.

Oh, I absolutely expect critic ratings to be abysmal for it. It's a light-hearted comedy. Comedy and Horror are the genres that it's hardest to appease critics in. It'll be a fun time though, for sure.

Watched two more new movies this week!

Singin' in the Rain (1952)
I've seen some of the musical numbers before, but seeing the whole movie was a completely new experience - astoundingly well-crafted movie! The choreography is perfection, with some of the dance routines being almost exhaustingly complex & well-executed (the fact that Donald O'Connor was bed-ridden for three whole days after "Make 'Em Laugh" really gives you perspective about the effort put into this movie). There's a special kind of charm & warmth to the movie that's almost inescapable... yet, at the same time, it's a poignant watch given how things have changed since the movie came out; it's doubtful we'll ever see movies with this kind of unbridled sincerity & innocence hit mainstream screens ever again. Oh yeah, before I get too bleak here, I've gotta bring up the hypnotic cinematography of the "Broadway Ballet" scene - just hypnotic! There's a lot more I could put here, but I don't want to get too carried away... 10/10

Scream (1996)
Meh. The meta jokes were way too heavy-handed + cheesy (I actually found that conversation between the protagonist & her boyfriend early where they kept mentioning different movie ratings to be even harder-to-watch than the father/son talk scene from Happiness (1998)), and the climax was really convoluted & sloppy. It had some nice 90's nostalgia value & it was at least kinda fun to watch, but overall not that great. 5/10

Decided to slightly-lower my ratings for It Follows & Jacob's Ladder.

I saw Singin' In The Rain for the first time earlier this year too, loved it. Easily one of my favorite musicals, may be my favorite non-animated musical.

Scream's... decent. Wasn't personally a huge fan, but I enjoyed it well enough for what it was.

That does remind me, I really want to see Happiness, it's been high on my list for a while, but given the nature of it it's kinda hard to find anywhere. >_>

Also, saw Incredibles 2 today. Fantastic movie. I'd say it's on par, or should I say, Parr ;) with the original, almost exactly. I might like the original slightly more, but only a touch, the quality is practically the same.

What really makes it work is that it doesn't feel forced in the slightest. It's a sequel in the purest sense: It feels like a natural, seemless progression of the story introduced to us in the first one, and I love it for that. It feels more like just part two of the first movie as opposed to the typical idea of a "sequel", and it works amazingly.

I was worried from the trailers that they were going to go the cliche "oh no, the dad doesn't know how to handle life at home, wackiness ensues!" route, but even though it starts down that path, it instead goes in the direction of the father realizing he's struggling, and learning to adapt and help his family, paralleling Elastigirl's return to a life of crime fighting, and the 2 plot lines come together surprisingly well in the end.

The villain was pretty easy to see coming, but was still really interesting. I felt her motive was a little weak, but not unbelievable, and the whole mind controlling screens thing, even though it's been done before, was still done in a really cool way.

I loved it personally. I'd honestly argue it's the best Pixar sequel, period.

Do you have Xfinity on Demand? Idk if it's still on, but that's how I watched it a few years ago. That being said, I just checked eBay & it looks like it's a really difficult movie to own physically - there doesn't appear to be a Blu-Ray release, and the few DVD listings are going for $25+. Still, if you get the opportunity, it's absolutely worth checking out. It's by far one of the best American movies of the 90's, and despite all the fucked up things that happen in the movie, watching it now is actually somewhat of an... uplifting experience, oddly enough.

As for Singin' in the Rain - yeah, I'm not even that big of a musical fan, but it's undeniably a masterfully-crafted film; sure, plenty of big-budget films nowadays require a ton of effort from the editing department & various other behind-the-scenes workers, but very few modern films exist from the past few decades where you can actually feel the blood, sweat, tears & passion put into them the way you can with a movie like Singin' in the Rain. That being said, I'd still probably put The Wizard of Oz above it... but it's a pretty narrow victory.

I don't, unfortunately. I have Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and I could probably get ahold of my friends HBO if I needed to.

I've been trying to watch more and more films that deal with "uncomfortable" issues and such. I'm working on my first feature script right now, and it's about a pretty controversial subject, so I wanna look at the good ones to see some good ways of going about it.

The Disaster Artist was my favorite film last year. I admittedly didn't see much though. Just lots of comic book movies and anything getting Oscar buzz. I really loved Baby Driver

I watched Early Man yesterday and I feel like people on the Theater board have been overrating it in the movie ranking thread. It was good but not top 10. Shaun the Sheep was so much better

I watched Incredibles 2 today and going at 10:20am on Father's Day was a mistake. The theater was packed, which is fine, but the loudest kid in the movie was seated behind me and kicking my seat. The kid kept asking questions and then the parents would explain. It really took me out of the movie

I just watched the Insidious: The Last Key intro and I'm going to hate this

Anyone see any fatherhood-centric movies for Fathers Day? I didnt, but I watched some Finding Nemo clips on YouTube. Anyways, gonna start Carrie (1976) now; Sissy Spaceks been on a winning streak for me so far, having starred in two of the best movies Ive seen this year (Badlands & The Straight Story), so hopefully the movie with arguably her most iconic role delivers!

But as for what I did watch tonight, The Twelve Chairs, it was so boring and, considering it was by Mel Brooks, unfunny. Such a waste of time.

Really? Never seen it, but I've heard good things about it.

Rewatched Black Swan and The Witch tonight, both great movies.

I liked Hereditary, but The Witch feels like what Hereditary should have been.

The pacing, while still slow, felt much less forced in The Witch. The plot was comparatively simpler, which worked in its favor while building tension and atmosphere, and the ending, while similar, felt more satisfying with The Witch.

Well I think Ive spent enough time procrastinating my Carrie review... I think Ill keep things short:

The storyline itself is one that, under typical Hollywood execution, would make for 7/10 movie, but Brian De Palmas direction really brought it up a notch. Simply put, the imagery & reoccurring sense of suspense throughout the movie is incredible (following might not actually be a spoiler, but filtering just in case). In particular, the climax & the scene leading up to it warrant a ton of praise; even after watching a couple Kubrick films & many David Lynch films, the slowness of the build-up scene still felt remarkably audacious.

Carrie is a horror movie that is very conservative in the scare department, but unlike other movies such as Jacobs Ladder, I didnt come away from the movie feeling deprived; 80% of the movies horror stems from real, everyday, horror, such as bullying & child abuse (though in Carries case, its certainly more extreme than normal), and when the actual, more conventional horror scenes come into play, they feel genuinely earned.

Carrie is one of a select breed of horror movies (such as David Cronenbergs The Fly) that are arguably more sad than they are scary - even if youre a hardened horror fanatic & never get scared by movies, Carrie is still a movie thats very tough-to-watch at times, and is will likely stick with you for a short while after youve finished it. Its not a perfect movie, but it did a great job exploring not only supernatural horrors, but also the horrors of basic, human things like womanhood; the movie certainly felt ahead of its time in its focus on girl-on-girl bullying, at least. Sissy Spacek continues her winning streak for this year! 8/10

I really need to watch Carrie.

I did watch The Departed and The King's Speech this week, which I believe brings me up to seeing 30 Best Picture winning movies.

The Departed was fantastic, I loved it. The ending legit caught me by surprise, when Leonardo Dicaprio's character died in the elevator I was legit shocked, and then pretty much everybody else ended up dying.

The King's Speech was really good, but idk, it felt kinda small scale for a Best Picture winner. It just felt very simple, which is nice, but I don;t really see myself watching it again.

The problem with The King's Speech is that, when compared to the other movies in the pretty strong BP field for that year, a decent-at-best movie winning seems out of place. 127 Hours, Black Swan, Toy Story 3, True Grit, Inception and The Social Network were all much better movies.

Black Swan should have won it IMO, I adore that movie.

Have you ever seen or heard of Perfect Blue (1997)? I haven't seen Black Swan & still need to finish Perfect Blue (had some troubles with my DVD freezing), but apparently it was the inspiration for Black Swan, and Aronofsky borrowed quite a bit from it when he made Black Swan. The fact that you're looking for movies that deal with "uncomfortable situations" might make it worth watching as well, since it deals with issues like stalking & rape (the movie has a rape scene that's technically not actually a rape scene, but it's still extremely hard to watch).

Word of advice: If you want to watch Perfect Blue subbed, avoid the American DVD release. I spent like, the first half hour of the movie swapping frequently between the subbed & dubbed versions, and only because the subtitles they used were ugly as sin - blocky, yellow subtitles with harsh black outlines, like I was looking at a god damn construction site.

lol, the whole time I was watching Black Swan, I was thinking of this movie.

At least The King's Speech is nowhere near the worst case of 'movie wins Best Picture over movie(s) that are obviously much better.' From what I can tell, the big cases of that are:

Cavalcade over I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932/33)
How Green Was My Valley over Citizen Kane (1941)
The Greatest Show on Earth over High Noon (1952)
Ordinary People over Raging Bull (1980)
Shakespeare in Love over Saving Private Ryan or The Thin Red Line (1998)

There's also minor cases in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Kramer vs Kramer, Driving Miss Daisy, Dances with Wolves, and Forrest Gump, although people usually don't have as much of a problem with these movies.

Shakespeare In Love winning is still the most awful thing ever as far as Oscar's go. It's a solid rom-com at best, like, it's not even that good of a film to begin with IMO, and then add onto that it somehow beating Saving Private Ryan.

Like, what the fucking fuck.

Fuck Weinstein. Not only is he a shitbag, but he's the entire reason that movie won.

Also, you're forgetting Crash from that list.

I've heard about it, never seen it though. I really need to give it a watch, it looks super interesting.

I need to watch more Japanese animated films ,a good chunk seem like they'd be right up my alley in terms of thrillers and such, I just don't really even know where to start, outside of Studio Ghibli I've seen very few Japanese films in general.

Oh, and Battle Royale.

Not a movie, but I've been watching through all of Scrubs recently, almost done with it.

Good show, really repetitive though. >_>

But that's kind of the case for most sitcoms that go on as long as Scrubs did.
