There some articles about it from a few years back.

The general idea being "committing" something has criminal implications.

You "commit" murder.
You "commit" theft.

No one says "Mr Gates committed generosity with his charitable donations last year".

The idea being if someone suffered from depression to the point of losing their life it can upset the surviving family members to have criminal implications on their loved ones on top of that.

I can definitely recognize the logic of that and will try to adjust my speech regarding suicide in the future. But i won't get bent out of shape if someone else doesn't.

because if reasonable people stop using the phrase, that leaves a group of people innocently using at and anti-pc assholes who virtue signal to each other, making people who have good manners too uncomfortable to use it. Soon, subconsciously, we'll start to resent the people who are ignorant behind the reason the phrase is charged, driving a bigger rift between generations and people.

You're literally doing more harm than good.
