$200 at a Walmart in Georgia. I live in Massachusetts. Called my bank and they canceled my card, but can't issue a new card or a refund until Monday. Shouldn't be much of an issue, but I don't know how it got compromised in the first place. Last thing I bought with it was pizza last night.

Now I have to contact all of the places I use the card that are set up for automatic withdrawals.

Fuck thieves.

Most banks are insured for this stuff, and they'll refund it if it's deemed fraudulent. I should be able to get it back.

I remember when my debit card got used by some bloke four or so years ago.

That week was incredibly stressful, and they had to refund like four-hundred of my American dollars that were fraudulently used by some thief.

I had something similar happen to me and they could get most of the funds back (probably 90% but my account was drained)

Glad you caught it and hopefully you'll be able to get your money back! See if your bank offers fraud protection too. Every time I make an online purchase I get an email and text saying I made a purchase and if it's on a site I've never used before I get a pin sent to me that I enter on my bank app before the transaction can complete... basically 2 factor authentication for purchasing.

The potential to lose any amount of cash is why I never charge anything to a debit card and only use credit cards. They have excellent fraud detection, you don't owe anything for fraudulent charges, can't lose cash and can get perks (like additional warranties, airline miles, cash back, etc.).

Why do you guys use debit cards instead of credit cards?

Visa accepts 100% liability on non pin transactions. You'll most likely get a provisional credit immediately, they'll send you a form affirming that it was in fact not you, once they receive said form they're essentially bound to believe you. They don't typically spend resources investigating.

Charges from random places come from data breaches. Target, home depot, etc were the big ones but they happen all the time. Your card number, cvv, and exp is sold along with others to criminals on the dark web who make replica cards using said info. Your pin isn't compromised so they can only run charges as credit, however.

Good advice. You can dispute charges either way but why tie up your money when you can tie up the credit card companies' money instead?

That's how I sell credit cards at work after people see debit card fraud too, but it is good advice.

In Canada people use debit way more then credit.
Maybe cause interac has better debit security then any US debit companies.
US is far behind chip technology though, and the rest of the world is far past them

I used to work in banks in Fraud Prevention, and it's common that users get their credit cards compromised. But should not worry, the banks will refund everything. By the way, I know how to do some auto-fraud in order to not get caught by your bank, and pretend you were victim of a fraud. I worked at Citi.

My debit card is a Visa card, but I'll probably start using my credit-only card moving forward. I get bonus rewards and shit for using the credit card anyway. Just like the convenience of debit in not having to pay a bill every month.

I get the convenience issue.

One other risk I just thought about. I do electronic transfers and write checks from my checking account to pay bills. My debit card also is tied to my checking account. So if I used it to charge something and some fraudulent user got the information, it could also cause me to be unable to pay bills or bounce checks because the funds were either drained or tied up.

But most of all, I use a credit card for the reasons I mentioned before and because I carry a relatively high balance in my checking account.

My credit card has been fraudulently used three or four times, but every time it has been caught quickly, I had to pay nothing and got a new card sent to me by overnight mail. I just don't want to deal with the potential complications of someone accessing a cash account.

And I hate these scumbags too.

You hand your credit/debit card to every cashier you encounter. That's something that has always blown my mind.

Any one of them could easily steal your money and get away with it.

Also, using Windows. Buying things using Windows. Especially anyone using an old version of Windows, like 7 or (Christ why) XP.

"Walmart in Georgia", I have a hunch someone took a picture of your card while using it and sold it to some guy in Georgia.

Not necessarily. A lot of store now have the card thing that you slide/insert yourself.

They COULD. But if you found out and tried to sue the store, most stores with cameras would probably throw the criminal under the bus to save face...

Dude, my credit card got comped like a month and a half ago. They used it at a hotel and some other travel type stuff.

they funny thing is that maybe like a week or two later I had to buy plane tickets for my honeymoon.

Also, on my credit card I have auto pay set up. So I never really need to worry about making payments to it since it does it for me.

I know about those. For a one off scam, they wouldn't be able to trace it back to you as long as you don't make it a pattern and you wire everything anonymously. Aka, not "an unusual amount of people who had their money stolen bought from you recently"

I think my point is it's easy as hell for anyone to do it. Remotely, a smart person can do it even easier.

I had both my main cards(debit and main credit card) get compromised when Sears Holdings(Kmart/Sears) and Target both got hacked.

They even made a clone of my credit card and tried using it in Brooklyn, NY to buy cigarettes at a convenience store. Luckily I checked my credit card for some reason the night it happened or just soon after. It wasn't for much but it was annoying having to call them up at 3 am to dispute it. So yeah I'm with you TC. fuck thieves.

Thing is it wasn't just my card that got cloned. It was a theft ring and they had a TON of them on them when they got caught a month or two later I think.

Sucks that you have to go through this. The simplest way to prevent this kind of thing is to give the person caught the death penalty. Yeah, I know.. it sounds extreme but this kind of BS thievery shouldn't exist.

I had that issue happen to me twice in the last 10+ years.

1) Debit card. This was way before I got my credit card, I had to buy gas and I was at an unfamiliar gas station one time. I stupidly used my Debit Card instead of Cash. Next thing I know the person who stole my information purchased $99 of gas 8 times in one day (All in different cities).

2) Credit card. I went to Pavilions/Vons one Saturday night. I frequent this store pretty often too and never had any issues. Well, one night I bought like $40 worth of groceries and then when I got to my car I realized I forgot to buy bread. So I went back in, bought bread and went to a different line for checkout. Used my card again. The next day, I suddenly see a $550 charge from a flight from LA to Dallas along with a $35 Uber ride.

You'd think tracking someone down who used that kind of information would be pretty simple right? Just put them in jail.. do SOMETHING. Not just a slap on the wrist.

This is why it keeps happening. It's an inconvenience for us whenever it happens.
