Upfront, 4/10.

The biggest offense of this "film" would have to be in the last act where they spell out the entire plot for you again in case you were passed out (which is a very likely circumstance, considering the horrifyingly slow pace of this production) in which the babbling of Annie going on about the occult and paranormal feels like they tossed the script to a 15 year-old who just discovered creepy pastas.

The sound design was nice, especially with a good surround sound system, but the score had much to be desired. I understand that while A24 has a huge spotlight on it after Moonlight and for casting up and coming actors and actresses, I felt like they did a horrible job casting here. Toni Collette absolutely nailed it though after finding Charlie's body in the car, which was truthfully the most gut wrenching scene in the movie, ironic considering you actually see none of what she saw. That was also the apex of the movie's horror for me, because of how visceral and real it felt. That actually could have happened and seems more traumatic than anything else prior to the climax.

You might be thinking, "Well, GK, it just sounds like you don't like spirits and ghosts and stuff" but that's not it. It just felt like they really missed out on delving deep into that psychological horror brought about by the previous spoilers, but they let it fall flat in my opinion. If you haven't seen it yet, (not a true spoiler, but for purists, you want to avoid) pay attention to the lectures during the school scenes. That was a nice little touch that drew some interesting parallels and I appreciate the artistry there.

tl;dr: Props to the lead female, shame about the supporting cast, music sucked, plot and themes felt half-baked.
