the point in isolation is a valid one: we define a lot of ourselves through media we consume and have no part in the creation of. that is a bad thing.

my identity relates to brewing, and still does even though i'm an alcoholic and i don't drink anymore. i would have lost my entire identity if i was only identifying as a 'beer person' from the beers i drank.

Just read the OP, it's kinda true. Literally everything has been commercialized, and yes there are still "math nerds" and "science nerds" but realistically that's not what people think of these days when they think of "nerd". It's just a name people throw around.

Our whole society is about capitalizing on niche movements and concepts now, because someone makes a meme about it that gets popular and a company says "this is popular" and then they pump out stuff related to that meme until it stops being profitable.
