^ That was part 1 which took place last Friday. The cute vietnamese girl showed up at 10:32 for her 11AM.

Well today, some dude interviewing at 2 showed up at 136.

Like where the hell is he getting these people? Or maybe the recruiter he's working with is bad at his/her job and is getting these randoms.

Even funnier is, he had another 11AM today and the dude didn't bring his resume or anything to write with. My boss told us how it went; he noticed he didn't have his resume, so he went out of his way to ask "so can i see your resume?" and said it was just all downhill from there. He (the interviewee) said "I could email it to you right now if you want"

But yeah. Interview lasted 8 minutes, a few of which were spent with my boss naming similar companies that might be hiring.

Not great. Plus side, aside from the vietnamese chick (who he said interviewed almost too well), the following two have totally bombed. I know he has one more scheduled at some point, but odds are shaping up that we're going to get a cute asian chick in this hilariously all-white office.

I don't know exactly what he meant because he kinda glossed over it, but I took it to mean like maybe she's overqualified or something.

Nothing, as long as you don't mind waiting. Again this is too early, like the one on friday. I understand wanting to account for traffic and whatnot, but if I got there half an hour early, I'd be sitting in my car for maybe 20 minutes.

5-10 minutes is the right time to show up before an interview. There are plenty of articles about how yes it is possible to be too early, despite the fact that yes you're showing initiative and responsibility by being there early.

I mean yeah he kinda is

I dunno if you read the topic from last friday, but as a sort of "punishment" for showing up 28 minutes early, he also waited until like ~11:15 before actually starting the interview:

Yeah I mean this is a full-time salaried position so obviously none of that would be happening, but there's a line. I think she crossed it.

THAT SAID, at 11:08, I went back to his office after stealth-seeing she was still out there (couches are near the bathrooms), so I went into his office like "uh do you want me to get her or something?" and he goes 'this is like you hounding me for the $2 i lost to you in the foosball bet; ask for it too quickly and you'll take longer to get it; she shows up 20 minutes early, she's getting an interview 20 minutes late.'

I want to say he's exaggerating, but as of 11:08 when this conversation happened, she was still out on the couches. He might deadass be planning on waiting until 11:28.

The fuck? Where did I complain about someone being punctual? My boss is the one complaining and "punishing" people for being early. I take no qualms with people showing up early. If I'm busy then I won't go out of my way to start early, but I'm not going to fucking make someone wait even longer for being early, which is what my boss did.

Yes we can get into whataboutisms, but in the professional world, a big majority of people are either driving themselves or taking urban public transit which is generally pretty reliable.

Oh fair.

Yeah again it sure can be an issue for people, but it would be pretty rare to have someone A.) take public transit and B.) not have a starbucks or whatever nearby. I mean hell even a bench outside the building isn't a terrible idea.

Even then, if it was me, I'd say I'm sorry for being so early, the buses were way quick today or something like that.

Yeah, I've tried to get in the habit of just bringing a folder of copies of my resume to interviews. Usually its not needed, but I was caught off-guard once so have usually brought it after that.

As for being early... I've been late a couple times when I got lost going to an interview a town or two over that I thought I knew my way to but didn't (this was the days before GPS and smart phones). >_> So I usually give myself a ton of time, but wait in my car until 10 or so minutes until my appointment time.

You know, not everyone lives within 10 minutes of their job. Some people live 20-35+ miles away from work and have to leave early to get to the job on time, accounting for traffic that could possibly make them late. I roll up to work at least 25 minutes before my shift every single day because I live 23 miles away from it.

It's also like, getting pretty hot everywhere in the US right now, so assuming someone drove their car, why would they in their right mind want to sit in a parking lot for 20-30 minutes wasting their gas to keep the A/C on before going into a building with the A/C already on? I completely understand why someone would be "too early" to an interview.

lol showing up early

I always show up 3 minutes late to an interview. And if they try to pull that shit where they make you wait, walk out. You either establish your dominance right off the bat, or you find somewhere else to work. Let them know from the start that you're not going to be pushed around or inconvenienced on their whim. The only thing worse than being late is being too early, I think. You end up making whoever you're meeting feel flustered and annoyed.

Best plan is to arrive early but park around the corner and sit in your car or go for a walk, so that you walk in perfectly on time.

All recruiters in the NYC and LI area tell you to arrive 30 minutes prior to the interview.

In that time, they usually give you some forms to fill out depending on the position.

I always bring a resume in my pocket, but it has never been asked for ever. The employer will have it in their hands. Otherwise you don't want to work with shoddy fucks like TC's boss who is unprepared himself.

Like arrive within 5 minutes of the time you're supposed to be there. If it's a 10am meeting, be there at 9:55, but no later than 10.

If someone gave you shit for being on time then I guess they're probably an asshole and not someone you'd want to work for. Unless you walked in at like 10:02 or something because your watch and their watch were slightly different?

Most companies have a waiting area. In a world of smart phones, its really no big deal. I dont see why people would want someone to sit around in a car like that.

Ive had candidates show up to an hour early. Some people have crazy commutes and need to leave extra early or spend hours in traffic. That would be lame to expect them to wait in the car for an hour.

Sounds like you're a reasonable person and understand mitigating circumstances. I can't say the same for all senior management. Some would be annoyed that they feel put on the spot and others would get a bad vibe from the candidate as if they've got nothing better to do than sit in a waiting room.

Also I think that depends on the size of the company. A lot of companies just have a room they stick you in or a common area where you're in full view of the entire office. I don't think that's a good place to be if you're going in for an interview and you're nervous. Personally I'd rather walk straight in with as little wait as possible.

Generally I'd advise someone avoid doing something that could easily give off a bad impression or annoy the person who's interviewing them.

I got the above advice from my father who was a career diplomat. When he'd go to meet very senior government officials (ambassadors, secretary of state, PMs, etc) he would make absolutely sure never to arrive early.
