Holding eye contact is honestly strange. As a cashier I speak to hundreds of people a day and people interact so differently. Some people make zero eye contact and are completely nonverbal. Some will mumble. Some will mumble and make brief eye contact. I try to gauge how the rest of the interaction will go based on their first response after I say hello. Anyway, sometimes a customer and I hold eye contact for what feels like way too long and it's sort of uncomfortable? But also not? Do you like to make extended eye contact? No eye contact? Life is so weird omfgg

I usually try not to maintain constant eye contact for the duration of a conversation, since that does feel a little weird

I'll break for a second or two when it feels natural
