Must be really annoying to just sit there and not get any playing time, or just get playing time in extra time. Do they get paid for being at the game at all? Is it less than if they had play time at all?

They are usually paid salaries. Top players will likely get bonuses from playing though depending on the sport.

I think most people would be happy to make over a million in 3 years by sitting on a bench

I'm sure they would, but most NFL players don't have any actual job skills, so they're making a million in 3 years and then out in their early 20s. That's not gonna cover retirement. I'm just saying it's not as glamorous in the long term as people think.

That sounds great. Get a front row seat to watch games and paid good money to sit on your ass.

I'm sure that'l be enough to cover education / tuition if they ever wanted to get back in there. They could even open a bar or a restaurant.

The poverty level for a family of 4 is like $25k a year. It would take them 40 years to make a million lol. I wouldnt try to act at all like its not a sweet deal those dudes get

The best job ever is being the third goalkeeper in biggest European clubs.
You obviously need three goalkeepers for the season, because if one is injured or gets a red card you still need another backup to be on the bench.
But in reality, those guys never play a minute during the whole season, but they still earn around 300-500k per year.
Don't even have to travel to away games.

This. You could coast off dividends alone and never run out of money. You won't be living a rich lifestyle, but you could certainly live life on your own terms.

Let's not forget you would still be expected to train and be ready if the time comes. But even then, you're getting a million just to stay in shape and learn the plays.

They get paid regardless of playing time. Some even get 15-20 million a year from a previous bad contract.
