Haven't played since the base game went free to play. I had a guardian and warrior at vanilla max level.

Thinking about using the free character boost to get a mount from PoF and then level a brand new Revenant. How is the state of the game these days?

Pretty good. Big new patch coming next week, may not apply to you but you'll at least unlock the new map that comes with it for when you get there.

Log-in before then to unlock the current new map as well. You'll have to buy previous living world stories sadly but they aren't too much. When you want them that is.

Yeah I never even did the vanilla living world stories, so I imagine I have a lot of catching up to do. I can farm in-game gold to unlock the content though right?

Yeah, once you learn how it's very easy to accumulate gold that you can use to buy gems for cash shop stuff.

Also Revenant is a good class to use a boost on because levelling as one is painful. It relies on having its skills available to be fun.

Mace/Axe is the current "top" weapon set and the damage is condition based. This may be beyond you since you haven't played in awhile but conditions are REALLY good nowadays compared to when you played.

You'll still need to unlock the elite specializations but that's not too bad. A lot of people just do Path of Fire up until you unlock your mounts and then do the rest since mount access is account-wide once you unlock them you can use them whenever even on new characters.

i installed it again a while back but gave up when i wasnt able to transfer to a "top tier" world pvp server

It's pretty popular. Server only matters for World PvP and even then it doesn't matter that much and anyway the current system is gonna be scrapped eventually so servers won't even be a choice really. They have a lot of plans in the early stages they shared already.

So the current system is on borrowed time anyway

It's a good MMO to pick up especially if you don't wanna grind eternally just to "catch up". There's a lot to do but it's a game where you can take breaks for awhile if you get burned out or just want to and never really fall behind on anything save for story stuff. That's mostly because progression isn't based on eternal gear grind. The top stats are Ascended gear which isn't uncommon later on and even Legendary weapons/armor being a huge grind they still have the same stats as Ascended.

Engineer is really fun. Especially with Holosmith from Path of Fire. You use holograms for attacks and light based things... hard to explain.

So far I'm not enjoying revenant as much as I thought I would, but I'm only level 15. I don't like their weapon choices.
