I say none, but I'm interested to hear any differing opinions. I remember when Roger Ebert was saying that video games weren't an art form and FFT was relatively new at the time and frankly, I think it should have put him in his place and put that notion to bed.

Anyway I'll get it out of the way.

there is no way he ever would have played FFT though. even if you gave it to him, he would have refused to touch it, saying he doesn't have time for it. and then he'd say "but I am sure it sucks"

people who didn't grow up with video games just have a hard time seeing them as anything else than children's toys. even my dad who has seen me play games my entire life, still doesn't get why I do it. he is incapable of moving past them just being a simple thing that you shouldn't play anymore once your an adult.

there is nothing anyone could have done to change Ebert's mind

I mean, obviously. It wasn't exactly a well known game when it was released. The point of this topic isn't about the machinations of Roger Ebert's brain though. I want to know if anyone can name a game with a better story than FFT.

My copy of FFT is almost old enough to drink. I've tried many times to cling together, but that game wouldn't let me/my patience wore thin.

I really like the way Mafia III's story is told; you get these interview clips as part of a documentary about the events of the game, interspersed with the "present-day" action and cutscenes.

The second disk is more like a novelization of the rest of the story than anything else. If you see it this way, then it's not that bad.

I mean, I get that, but I feel like the subtlety and nuance, that made the game so great, was cast aside on the second disk.

Specifically in the case of Roger Ebert it's unlikely he would appreciate a modern high fantasy like FFT.

He had a huge hard on for an arbitrary set of "classics" and would be more likely to rate the story of Force Unleashed higher than FFT because of it's association with Star Wars.

With that said, the video game story I'd give him to review would be Spec Ops: The Line as it's functionally a retelling of Heart of Darkness. He rated the book 3.5/4 and the Apocalypse Now movie 4/4.

The story is just not delivered the same way. I mean just think of what happens in Solaris late in disk 1 and the discussions with Elly, Citan and Fei. You're led to think one thing, then another, then another.

Because they were in such a huge rush they were just not able to deliver the rest of the story in the same way. So they basically just had to summarize the rest of the story. It sucks bolshevik balls, but it is what it is.

No one will agree with me, but FFXII

Tactics is definitely one of my favourite video game stories though. It's just a shame it kind of falls apart at the very end when you switch focus away from all the interesting stuff and onto the very generic real villains.

I haven't played FFT so I couldn't tell you what I think is actually better, but I'd put Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky and Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors up there when it comes to quality storytelling. I'd also like to second Genealogy of the Holy War's nomination ITT. I mean, how many games have the balls to kill off most of your awesome playable characters and make you start over with a fresh batch of scrubs halfway through the game?

Please no. They've already proven that the magic is just gone. Stop violating our lord with these inch deep pig iron idols. FFT and FF9 were brothers, best of their kind fated to watch the grand lineage they sired require diapers far into their adult lives.

The worst part is that I can't even really bring myself to fully hate Arvis. I mean, yeah he was a colossal dickhead about how he achieved his goals, but he really just wanted what he thought was best for the world, and he did legitimately love his family, fucked up as it was. Even Sigurd's ghost doesn't want you celebrating his death. Damn, that was a well written villain.

V and III are my favorite FFs because of it, and unofficially BD.

I looked and couldn't even find any sort of treasure trove of indie games with a solid job system. Nothing. It's like SE owns the concept and chooses to rarely use it.

I know most people love 6 best of the early ones, and like one of the next few even more, but I just can't help but love 5 for the amazing job system. And while the story isn't anything special, it's not exactly bad to the point of holding the job system back.

I don't really mind 3's either. IDK how it was in the original, but I rather liked it in the DS remake. Which was actually my first FF aside from FFCC.

Anyway, sorry for the derail, I just super love job systems. But I don't think I have a system that can play FFT.

Nah, the seeds were there since the second game. Don't get me wrong, it's a good game, probably the best in the trilogy, but instead of improving all the aspects from the original that didn't quite work, they just cut them off entirely and streamlined it so it would be more appealing.

Shit, that's another good answer. I could never get into ME2 the same way as ME1. Just felt like the magic was gone at that point, or at best just not as special anymore. Meanwhile I actually liked ME1 enough to play it more than once.

This would definitively be #1 if that second disk was actually fleshed out.

I mean yeah, the second disc was easily inferior to the first one overall, but that's where the main meat of the story came in. That disc sold the story to me.

Shame that they only had the choice to either end the game at the end of disc one on a cliffhanger and hope for good sales, or try to finish it with a skimped last disc. But I don't blame either Square or Takahashi for it tbh. My dream would be to see Square, Monolith, and Nintendo teaming up for a remake someday, but that will never happen.

Yes definitely, Xenogears will always dominate really high up there.

I wish they would go back to that game and remaster it, and just use the old PS1 engine to finish up the game.

Well..if Square Enix hasn't lost the hardware for it, seems like a lot of Japanese Studios tend to lose their code and whatnot.
