In most cases, "you used to be a man" is not enough to keep gay men interested in someone who looks more like a woman. After a certain point of transition, a trans woman starts becoming less and less compatible with most gay men. This is especially true once she's post-op. And if she's trying to move closer and closer towards typical female patterns of behavior...there's multiple reasons gay male culture is going to become unappealing to her for dating anyway. This is actually a longstanding controversy between the two demographics. It's not uncommon for a gay couple to break up after one partner decides to take steps towards transitioning into a woman. At the end of the day, the majority of gay men are physically attracted to the male form and characteristics.
