My wedding was 7 or 8 grand (in 15 years ago money) and I thought that was super expensive.

What's making it so expensive? What's going to be making it unique?

How long have you been planning it?

Thats an expensive wedding but its your life. Only you two know if its right for you.

We spent $11-12k and got like $5k back in gifts. Zero regrets, I remember the day almost photographically. CEmen are just bitter/cynical.

It's been asked but what exactly will make this unique and stuff? What are some plans?

50k is a bit excessive but no one really cares. You two seem to be well off. I'd personally use like 40k on a nice vacation as a celebration.

Wedding food? Pot luck. Make every group bring a meal to share.

Ours was a little over $60k (her parents paid almost half tho)....thinking back it obviously would be nice to have that extra money now, but if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't change a thing

Edit: I probably should add our honeymoon flights/hotels were free because I stocked up on miles/points when I used to travel for work which is partly why we spent a little extra on the wedding

What the hell kind of vacation costs 40k? You staying at a 5 star hotel in the Maldives for a month?

Maybe go see a lot of places. Traveling, food, hotel and buying random keepsakes add up.

Probably not even 40k but that's not the point. I'd utilize money elsewhere.

While $50K is expensive, it's not really that crazy because that's about the going rate for a good wedding these days.

Listen the sad reality is that you're not gonna make the money back with gifts. People are typically cheap and don't like going to weddings. It's considered an inconvenience these days. Yes family will and SHOULD come through for you guys but again...if your immediate family is contributing towards the wedding then that's their gift to you. Don't expect much more in the way of cash. Also you'll be surprised by how badly your friends screw you on the gift and give the bare minimum. It's a real eye-opener.

The other disappointment of weddings is that as the royal couple, you don't really get a chance to really enjoy it. Too much of the day is spent on staged pictures and making your way around greeting all the guests. You barely get to enjoy the open bar or food that's served. It's an exhausting, whirlwind of a day. And if something goes wrong, it can put the groom or bride in a bad mood for the entire event.

Well we had a guest count of about 225 people and a full open bar...also the venue was in Aliso Viejo orange county (nice area)...we also paid for an in n out truck for a surprise at the end of the night

Other costs include dj, she wanted special linens/chairs, floral arrangements, photo booth, gelato booth, etc.

You can spend a lot, depending. Most I ever dropped was 10k during a three week back-packing trip through Western Europe; mind you I'd been on tour in Afghanistan and this was my leave away from it. I'd spent the previous 40 odd days prior to going back to Kandahar and hoping on a plane sleeping in a hole I'd dug myself in the northern mountains, so i kinda went a little crazy on the booze and hotels, heh

Um...yeah? That's the whole point of a wedding bud. That's why people have them. The idea is that the money is supposed to get the newlyweds started off on the right foot. I didn't say that they would get all the money back. But getting 15-20k should be considered a win. Also minimum gift expected per guest is $150...which is theoretically supposed to be the cost of your plate and drinks.

Hes already commited and has wasted a lot of money, no one is going to change his mind about marrying this person now with 28k pissed away already.

I have a lot of money and have spent crap loads traveling with my sweethearts but this is just sad stupid wasting money.

There is no reason to waste all that money for 1 day, a trip around the world is a better use of money (its on our travel list and we all look forward to it).

A lot of men have been taken to the cleaners with a divorce, they literally get divorce screwed and go from living decently to barely surviving in a shit hole apartment.

Divorce almost always favors the woman and she has so much to gain while the man has everything to lose.
