Mario Tennis Aces is out today and I've just won my first tournament - as Waaaaluigi no less! First tourney entered too.

The game has fantastic design and hopefully Nintendo/Camelot stick with it for months to come. With a few more modifications (fleshing out match settings in particular) I'm all in for a while.

The first online tournament starts July 1st, and if you enter you unlock Koopa Troopa as a playable character. If you don't enter you'll get him for free on August 1st. Same thing with Blooper in the August tournament (and likely Diddy/Birdo/Paratroopa thereafter).

Hyyyype! Love me some tennis. Wimbledon is only a week and a half away, too!

I've been playing tournaments early this morning, and it's been stupidly hard, compared to how it was during the demo. I've had 8 tries at it and have yet to get past the third round, as opposed to the 22 tournaments and 5 tournament wins or whatever I had in the demo.

It makes sense, though. A huge chunk of the people doing online tournaments in the first 4 hours of a game's release are probably those who played the absolute shit out of the demo and couldn't wait for more.

I've been maining Rosalina. I tried Boo. His slices are ridiculous, but he just doesn't have as much on his shot as Rosalina does. The new winning strategy online seems to be playing the net and constantly doing backwards trick shots, and the extra curve on Boo's shots aren't particularly useful against that.

I completed the 3 CPU tournaments and they are laughably 1-and-done. I guess if you don't have internet the Star Cup could replace online tourneys for a couple moments.

Please tell me you can customize tournament settings a little more. Like it's not always best of 3 sets, 2 point game matches is it? Can you at least do best of 5 sets or games that are 4 to 6 points?

Since I heard Adventure mode was about 3 hours to beat and 6 hours to 100 percent, this is pivotal information for whether I'm getting this early or not.

Thisll be waiting for me when I get home from work. Havent truly loved a Mario Tennis game since N64, but this one just feels so promising. Baby Mario was my guy back then, but Im committing to Waluigi, no doubt.

It's very disappointing and such a pitiful oversight, I'm not sure how/why they did this.

You can only play between "Quick Play" and "Extended Play". Quick Play is a tie-breaker, first to 7, win by 2, usual rules. Extended Play is 2 games, 1 set, gotta win by 2. Basically the demo.

Amusingly the CPU tournaments have even longer matches. The Star Cup has Round 2 be 2 games, best of 3 sets, while the final is 2 games, best of 5 sets. But just against the CPU.

There's no option to extend the match length beyond 2 games, 1 set, which is bad.

since it's a fighting game I can understand shorter matches online. The adrenaline being that high for too long could cause heart issues

Yeah except this applies to offline too, which I don't get. It was in the previous Mario Tennis, why not include it here?

Hopefully they patch it in. They added several tweaks to MK8 from its vanilla state for sheer quality of life, I feel like this should happen too for the same reason.

I played a few Extended Play doubles matches with computers just to see how hectic it is. It's both fun and frustrating, because the front CPU wastes sooo much energy doing Trick Shots on balls headed directly at you in the back, and energy is shared between teammates. That and they never send special or zone shots at anyone. They will look for an opening on the court regardless of the situation.

Another easy fix should be court selection. Right now they have it as "All" (random selection from all courts), "custom" (random selection from your own preferences), or "Stadium" (random selection from just no frills stadium courts).

If you press + you can deselect all the courts you don't want in these random selections. So basically you just deselect all except the one you want. Why not just let you pick the one you want in a straight forward manner, with a random button on the side?

Mind you this doesn't apply to the online tournaments (only stadium courts), or the online free play (random courts, no customization) but still, the settings menu needs more time in the oven.

This game is gonna kill my hands. Played online--lost a pretty close game where I think we went back and forth in a tie for about 10 times in a row. Might have been more. When we finally finished, my hands were cramped.

I can't say I understand much problem with the bubbles, so long as you use your zone shots

The tiny gears though in the second part can be a nuisance since you actually have to aim ahead of them since they're so fast a simple zone shot isn't enough

anyhow woo I finally beat him the 400 challenge... pro-tip for that one: just focus on chaining Max Charge Shots in to keep the rally going without Kamek being able to do any challenging stuff. Also since Slices are slow, use those

if you're doing Max Charge Shot spam, basically you should be able to Zone Speed yourself back on track if you miss a Max Charge and your chain is derailed

per tradition I play online matches in fighting games without trying to learn anything just pick Wario and go

first online match I was using Left+X to accidentally trick shot most of the match and I lost hard

second match I found out the other 3 shot types and got used to all of Wario's abilities and won in a tiebreaker 7-2

came back down 5-2 in a tiebreaker against a waluigi as bowser and i had 1 racket life since like the second game. whew

that game allowed me to practice blocking all the power shots without breaking my racket at least!

Oh I won two tournaments in a row.

I was looking at the leaderboard, and like 5 of the top 10 are Bowser Jr. mains. I took him for a spin against a CPU real quick, and it's pretty easy to understand why. He moves at like 80% speed when charging, can hit a full-fledged shot without diving from a pretty good distance away, and he seems like he's part-technical, too, because his shots land very close to the sidelines.

God fucking dammit Nintendo how are you so awful at this? For the love of god they better not fuck up Smash Ultimate. They CANNOT fuck up Smash Ultimate online. Nothing but two stock For Glory matches are not going to cut it.

Haven't picked this up myself just yet, but a friend brought it over and we played a bunch of rounds. Holy crap man, I still can't believe how mechanically excellent this game is. It's just a ton of fun to play and matches can get super hype/tense. Add to it that they seem to have poured a bunch of actual effort in to the single player and this feels like a super easy buy as soon as I get the money.
