It's the only decent cheap phone Verizon offers. The only bad thing I've heard about it is that the updates are slow. It's only 250 though, I don't want to spend 1k on a phone.

Can't speak to the G6 specifically but I've heard good things. I'd get one if it had NFC.

You probably aren't gonna go wrong with a Moto phone. Their track record for phones is more good than bad, and even the bad ones usually aren't awful. It's true that updates tend to be slow and limited, but the flipside is that they're one of the most bro-tier companies when it comes to bootloader unlocking - they'll help you do it. That means their devices tend to have a good custom ROM scene, which for me is a top priority.

Yeah, I got tired of no updates on my previous Moto phones so I went against my usual philosophy of not paying too much for a phone and paid $650 for a Pixel 2. Completely worth it. Camera and updates are two things I'll go ahead and pay the extra money for.

But what is the con of not getting updates?

I got the Moto Z2 and I must say, it's a nice phone and I got the projector on a free promo they had last year. I'd upgrade but I'm not into staying current, everything is still good on it but I will admit, do not buy the mods like the projector because for the price they sell for is not worth it, the damn thing will run down in less than 30 minutes.

Security fixes and missing out on features you may want. For example, my last phone was a Moto X Pure and only got Android Nougat in November. I'd been waiting for split-screen mode and quick app switching for much longer than most people.

I've got a G5 Pro, love it. There are these motions you can do to activate features, like "chopping" with the phone turns the torch on and twisting the phone twice activates the camera.

Don't expect like an iPhone or Samsung Galaxy experience, but Moto phones are fun little pieces of tech. If the G6 is as good as the G5, it should hold up just fine.

what i'd probably do is spend like $100 or $200 more and get an unlocked year old flagship phone, galaxy s8 or iphone 7 or whatever.

this gets you a phone with better support from the manufacturer in regards to updates (especially with the iphone), a much better camera, better screen, little features like waterproofing, better hardware in general, etc.

I had a G3 and it was great for the price, but I threw it at a wall and broke it awhile ago

I have never had a Motorola phone I was happy with. My last one, the Moto X Pure, had a charging port that went to s***, a very common problem with it. The Moto X 2013 was amazing until it updated to Lollipop and then the battery life and overall performance made it practically unusable.

Receiving fewer updates isn't that much of an issue when you consider those flagships are gonna stop receiving them eventually as well. At that point your options are to replace the phone, which is just inefficient if the rest of it is working fine still, or do what I mentioned: unlock the bootloader and replace the ROM with a custom one.

The benefits don't end with staying up-to-date on patches and updates. Custom ROMs usually just take the stock ROM and add in a suite of features that are really nice to have, the kinds of things the stock ROM should just have by default already. A more popular device can easily see ROM's getting made which bump it up to the next version of Android, or even higher. My Moto G4 Play has no hope of getting Oreo from Motorola, and yet it's running an O-based ROM right now. It'll probably get a P-based one once that comes out too.

The fact that they receive them for longer means they get more features in the end.

It would have sucked ass if my Moto X didn't get Nougat. I use split-screen and picture-in-picture mode all the time. There was a lot of anger at the prospect that it might not have.

As for custom ROMs, not everyone has the time or technical know-how to even bother, nor are good ones always available depending on the device. After research I have yet to find anything really good for my Nexus 7, and that's me reluctantly taking the time to even research this when a Google device should not be this unsupported in the first place. Saying "Just do the work the companies should be doing" isn't a great answer.
