A lot of it is tongue-in-cheek. Like a huge amount of it is. It's British humour. People were saying "it's coming home" after the Tunisia game for crying out loud, which was a pretty poor second-half performance

And then a lot of it is just hope.

People are still aware, when you actually talk to them for a few seconds, that the squad is not that great.

Which means bookmakers think England are the strongest team in that half. Granted this might be somewhat slanted towards minimizing losses due to heavy betting from England fans but I'm looking at odds across all bookmakers, not just English ones. Seems like the consensus is:

Brazil - 7/2
France - 7/2
Croatia - 5/1 to 11/2
England - 11/2 to 6/1
Belgium - 6/1
Uruguay - 14/1
Colombia - 18/1

Everyone else varies between 20/1 (Russia) and 200/1 (Japan)

If England beat Colombia I'd imagine their odds would shorten to about 4/1

Not exactly, Like you said, bookmakers take into account interest from bettors. If everyone started to put money on Japan their odds would go up. Their job isn't to give proper odds, it's to maximize their profits.

I get it though. I get frustrated with Belgians who act like the only team that can beat us is Brazil, while any side with good wingers will probably tear us to shreds, and if we would ever end up against Uruguay I'd be shocked if we put a goal past them.

Oh you mean we say a team is good then they lose? Football isn't as predictable as some other sports, shock results happen for various reasons

I feel like we have already gone over this several times.

International football is rarely ever about 1 player. It's too hard to carry a team to a tournament win based off 1 players brilliance and it just doesn't happen. The odd game here and there but not an entire tournament. Ronaldo hasn't had the supporting cast. Messi has been hindered by Argentina being poorly managed forever. And because they are only once every 4 years you don't get a lot of chances at it either.

There's some fantastic players who never even played in a World Cup because of their nationality hindering them.

At the end of the day, not having a World Cup win won't hinder either player as going down as one of the all time greats. Just like it never did for other all time greats.

In theory that's why you have Fred or Fernandinho, they don't do the exact same job, but Brazil have on paper the most depth after France.

Brazil's backline + keeper have been excellent, they've forced Mexico into relying on bad shots.

Like yeah Mexico can score a wonder goal, but eliminating high percentage shots is a good defensive strategy.
