With just days to go before the halfway point of 2018, Toronto Police have confirmed at least 48 homicides within the city since January 1. That's more than double the 23 we'd seen last year at this point.

Five people were killed last weekend alone four of them by guns prompting both Police Chief Mark Saunders and Mayor John Tory to express public concern over a recent spike in shooting deaths.

"The incidents of gun violence we have seen in our city in the past few days are shocking and can in no way be accepted or brushed aside," said Mayor Tory late last month following a rash of high-profile killings.

"As mayor, I am troubled by every act of violence in our city regardless of where it happens."

______

University of Toronto Associate Professor of Criminology Scot Wortley, an expert in crime statistics, says that, based on an estimated population of 2.93 million, Toronto has a current crime rate of 1.67 per 100,000 people.

New York City, which has an estimated population of 8.62 million, had seen 130 homicides at the same point, according to the NYPD's CompStat crime data portal.

Wortley says this would put New York's homicide rate at 1.51 per 100,000 people

What will Canada do about this?

Not only are shootings becoming more frequent but instead of being targeted, people are being shot at random. A woman was shot on the weekend just sitting in the back of a friend's car just having a conversation, minding her own business. Really not sure if I want to live up here anymore.

The stereotype of Canadians being overly nice outside of hockey boxes out the rest of the world from the fact that some real shitty stuff happens in Canada.

Regina has 4 homicides per 100k people right now, Vancouver is full of gangs, Montreal has the mob, the prairies have all the native homicides, shit's messed up right now.

There's a reason the US and Canada are tied in most world and UN rankings right now, where as a few years ago Canada would always be way ahead.

Okay one thing to note here is that that 48 homicides figure includes the 10 people run over by Alek Minassian back in April, TC intentionally took that part of the article out. It might also include the 8 counts of murder that Bruce McArthur has been charged with, as the article makes mention of it but it's not clear whether they're included (I would assume yes). So that's 18 counts from 2 incidents alone, which heavily skews the numbers.

The article also does point out that the homicide rate is still lower than other notable cities like Chicago, Baltimore, New Orleans, LA, Winnipeg, and Regina.

Even the police chief is telling everyone to slow their roll.

4 murders per 100 k people.

In a town of 215,000.

Hell just go to Google Canada and search Regina. Every headline result is something related to a murder, or police involvement. It's a shitty town, Saskatoon craps all over it.

It doesn't. And the murders carried out by Minassian are still murders. I don't know why people like to act like those don't count.

Another thing you should realize is that people don't really live in Toronto

A good portion of the "population" are foreign investors, speculators, people on temporary work visas, international students, people squatting for a while and looking to move out any day etc.

So they use it as a dumping ground, throw their trash there then leave. It's turning into a real shit hole.

I'm not saying it doesn't count, just that it's an extreme outlier that's obviously contributing to a high variation in the numbers.

Just to circle back on this to 100% confirm it, the 48 figure does include the 10 killed in the terrorist attack but not the 8 people killed by Bruce McArthur (I'm assuming those get "attributed" to the year the people disappeared).

http://homicidecanada.com/toronto-homicide-victim-list-2018/

18-27 are the attack victims.
