Basically the aw in hawk uses a lower tongue position than the o in sock in "proper" English accents

Sock with the "ock" part pronounced like clock, and glock etc doesn't sound like hawk when I say it. "awk" is pronounced more like "or" words, like port, snort and caught

They rhyme to me and after reading all the posts in this topic thus far I still dont fully understand what the other pronunciation(s) are that would make them not rhyme. The vowel sound in hawk is made slightly further back in the mouth, but I'm not sure if that constitutes a different pronunciation.
